10 Gun tips you need to know about when flying with guns

Found this to be helpful first time I traveled with guns.

"Use a plastic ammo box or original cardboard packaging and you’ll be fine carrying that in the same lockable case as your gun."

great list, but that is one thing i am confused about there. i thought it was origional packaging only.

Original packaging for ammo is the rule, you may not get questioned but if you do your screwed.

I’ve flown out of JFK and LGA many, many times, maybe 100 over the years. I pack my handgun in a hard sided case, use a non TSA lock and usually have a loaded magazine and/or spare ammo in the same case as the gun.
I go to the ticket counter, inform the agent that I am checking a bag with a firearm in it and ask them to contact PAPD to clear me.
The process has always been routine, in fact, the biggest complaint I have is it sometimes takes a little while to the PA cops to make it to the counter(pro tip: when you arrive at the terminal look for a cop. Ask them if they’d mind accompanying you to the counter to check in a gun. If they can, they usually will AND if there is a line at the counter, they’ll bypass it with you…huge time saver).
Most of the cases I’ve heard of where the gun owner has a problem was if the gun was packed loaded or if they did not have a NY license. Of course you get the occasional nimrod who puts his gun in a carry on and gets popped at the security screening point…no pity for them at all.
Do I agree that most of the NY gun laws are stupid, politically driven and unreasonable? Yes. Do I abide by the law despite not agreeing w most of them? Yes. When out of towners are traveling into and out of NY they have the same responsibilities we all do…know the gun laws in the place(s) you are traveling to.
I like Stossel but this story didn’t make the (out of state residents, no NY license) issues clear.

Clarification, it should be a NYC specific license, not just a NY state license. Both airports are located in the bounds of NYC.

A friend of mine got in a lot of heat because he bought in a BB gun to security at JFK when checking into the flight. BB guns are legal to own in NY state, but in NYC you need to have a license for them. The Port Authority cops took no pity and threw a charge at him, but since it wasn't a firearm they didn't arrest him and let him fly. They still confiscated the gun and he still had to fight the charge later. Fortunately the judge dismissed the case.

Stossel's bottom line was arguing about prosecutorial discretion. Is a person who arrives to the airport, declares openly that he has a firearm or magazine or whatever a threat worth dragging through the system? Even though the airport is legally within city limits, it is a point of transit. I'm allowed to take my guns through NYC in my vehicle as long as they're in my trunk and are unloaded, and I'm transiting as opposed to hanging out. The same rule should apply to airports.

You do not need a NYC license to fly out of or into JFK or LGA.
If your friend brought a BB gun to security I would expect him to have a problem.
You can absolutely travel through a NY airport (Newark = meh) under FOPA but that does not include a stay in NY w the gun. In the video the woman stated she went to her hotel and the man attempted to go through security with a standard capacity mag. I am not supporting the NY law, but they are the law and as unfair as it might seem, those travelers should have educated themselves on what is and is not kosher in NY.

Unfortunately the Port Authority police takes the position that FOPA does not apply to travel by air since a plane is not a "vehicle" and FOPA only protects travel by "vehicle".

That is true about PA and FOPA

This was not too long after 9-11 when they were doing pre-screening of all luggage when entering departures. There was no earlier instance where he could have spoken to someone, he would not have entered departures without putting his bags through the x-ray, and the x-ray would certainly have picked it up.

About not needing a NYC license, I've never had this problem, but after all the BS that's going on I would never take that chance unless the chief of Port Authority personally met me at my cab and escorted me to the check-in counter.

Agreed that the woman in the video made a big mistake bringing her gun into the hotel w/o a NYC permit, and she was lucky she didn't get busted there.
