Never use steel wool or sandpaper on a collectible
just wipe with ballistoil or use the technique I described above to moisten the stock.

I've heard bronze wool is preferable to steel wool. Any particles that get embedded in the wood will not rust.

No steel wool or sandpaper to anything remotely collectible. I have a single rune BNZ K98 that I got for basically nothing, because the previous owner sanded the stock so much the wood was blonde. Put numerous coats of flax seed (food grade) on it, which took weeks to cure, and then numerous coats of boiled linseed oil to darken it slightly.
