    Hoppes Gun Medic or Ballistol?

    Hello all....

Anyone have any experience with either of these products? Intended use to go spray on a AR-15 bolt assembly between breaking down the rifle for cleaning. In other words if I have a light day at the range and put maybe 50 rounds through the firearm I'd like to spray down the bolt etc and reassemble instead of doing the standard removing the bolt, firing pin etc style of cleaning.

Any thoughts between the two products?

    Thanks!

50 rounds ? I wouldn't loose sleep over it..But since you're asking, ,I like Ballistol..Hoppes makes great products, ,it's a personal preference kind of thing...I would keep them both on hand..

50 rounds doesn't require any cleaning or oil. Hell I only cleaned after 1,500-2,000 unless the AR was filled with sand or had been soaked in rain.

But between those two I would use the Hoppes Gun Medic. Haven't used it too much but it seems to be alright for light cleaning an a light coat of oil. Worth keeping in the range bag just incase.

Ballistic smells like a Taco Bell dumpster in the summer. Has also caused my Asthma to flare up twice, it irritates the hell out of my lungs. I just avoid it.

Eesox spray is a good option also, works well and doesn't smell like shit.

Why spray anything at all? Is it really too much trouble to pull a pin and wipe the bolt down with a cloth and some cleaner? It would take you two minutes at the most.

Or swap out the AR for an AK and use the new AK lube (available in larger sizes).

Ballistol is an excellent lubricant and preservative / rust preventer. It's okay for light cleaning but not really a solvent. Hickok45 uses it liberally on his ARs. Some people like the smell and some people don't. I think it smells like licorice, initially, but then there's a secondary "funk" that I notice.

50Rnds of any decent 5.56 usually doesn't require heavy lube and or cleaning. That being said if its gonna stored away for a bit, lube it as normal after a wipe with either product. Both good with no major plus or minus on either. I keep some Ballistol in spray & liquid for use on AKs w/corrosive ammo as a lot of surplus eastern block and even current production 7.62x39 is a bit corrosive, but I digress
