did-you-kno:

If the statement was “There hasn’t been a mass-shooting at the unprecedented scale of the Port Author massacre of 1996” then it would have been accurate. “…and resulted in gun-related deaths decreasing at a rate of 3-5% each consecutive year.”
While gun violence did start to decline slowly after the gun ban and confiscation, total violent crimes and homicides actually increased at that point as much as nearly 9% until its peak in 1999.
You’ll notice that by trying to get rid of the guns in the country, Australia merely shifted the modus operandi; not the problem.
But needless to say, if you look what gun homicide was prior to 1996 (because the Port Arthur massacre counted for 35 deaths alone in ‘96) and what it was in 2013, you only have a total decline of about -20%. In fact, like with any trends, the number goes up and down every year compared to the prior year. Even going by percentage of population change, that is only a total change from .00032% to -.0002%. So, making the claim that gun deaths are decreasing 3-5% every year is completely disingenuous.
This study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, a completely biased unscientific organization run by gun control advocates, also states, “[there was] also a decline in total nonfirearm suicide and homicide deaths of a greater magnitude.” But this claim is also false. Suicide rates have remained steady ever since the gun ban. That because firearms have not been the main tool used in suicides in Australia since the late 80′s.
Well, at least their conclusion does state,”Because of this, it is not possible to determine whether the change in firearm deaths can be attributed to the gun law reforms.” So, at least they hold on to some tiny bit of integrity.
I hope now that these revelations have been brought to light that perhaps @did-you-kno will post a retraction about this bogus article. This Australian gun control myth has to be put to a stop.
Australia hasn’t had a mass shooting since they introduced gun control laws in 1996. Their major gun law reforms included a ban on semiautomatic rifles, pump-action shotguns, and rifles, and resulted in gun-related deaths decreasing at a rate of 3-5% each consecutive year. Source
