“Australia hasn’t had a mass shooting since they introduced gun control laws in 1996.”

    redbloodedamerica:
    did-you-kno:
Australia hasn’t had a mass shooting since they introduced gun control laws in 1996. Their major gun law reforms included a ban on semiautomatic rifles, pump-action shotguns, and rifles, and resulted in gun-related deaths decreasing at a rate of 3-5% each consecutive year. Source
“Australia hasn’t had a mass shooting since they introduced gun control laws in 1996.”

If the statement was “There hasn’t been a mass-shooting at the unprecedented scale of the Port Author massacre of 1996” then it would have been accurate. “…and resulted in gun-related deaths decreasing at a rate of 3-5% each consecutive year.”

While gun violence did start to decline slowly after the gun ban and confiscation, total violent crimes and homicides actually increased at that point as much as nearly 9% until its peak in 1999.
You’ll notice that by trying to get rid of the guns in the country, Australia merely shifted the modus operandi; not the problem.
But needless to say, if you look what gun homicide was prior to 1996 (because the Port Arthur massacre counted for 35 deaths alone in ‘96) and what it was in 2013, you only have a total decline of about -20%. In fact, like with any trends, the number goes up and down every year compared to the prior year. Even going by percentage of population change, that is only a total change from .00032% to -.0002%. So, making the claim that gun deaths are decreasing 3-5% every year is completely disingenuous.

This study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, a completely biased unscientific organization run by gun control advocates, also states, “[there was] also a decline in total nonfirearm suicide and homicide deaths of a greater magnitude.” But this claim is also false. Suicide rates have remained steady ever since the gun ban. That because firearms have not been the main tool used in suicides in Australia since the late 80′s.

Well, at least their conclusion does state,”Because of this, it is not possible to determine whether the change in firearm deaths can be attributed to the gun law reforms.” So, at least they hold on to some tiny bit of integrity.

I hope now that these revelations have been brought to light that perhaps @did-you-kno will post a retraction about this bogus article. This Australian gun control myth has to be put to a stop.

Good post. I've had to refute this tired argument...God, I've lost count of how many times. It's either England or Australia. Both of which have mass shootings. Then we get to the "well not as many as the United States" argument, which essentially means you've defeated them and they're floundering.

I also like to point out that there's usual a mental illness involved. Notice how many of these fuck ups shoot themselves in the head when confronted by armed resistance. They want control, no resistance, and when that's taken from them they opt to check out.

People also have to put countries, their cultures, and demographics into play with these stupid comparisons.

313M people US vs. 21M in Australia (without as much "diversity")

When you see a meme about Sweden or some other tiny countries gun stats compared to ours...
It's easy to compare a tiny, mostly homogenous culture with little crime to begin with.

The size and population of the US is incomparable.
The mix of cultures and suburban infrastructure in the US in unique.
The homogeneous cultures of other small (European for instance) countries can't compare to the social situation in the US.
The criminal element in the US vastly is more complex than that of most countries compared.

And yes, the US has a large gun ownership, yet the incident levels of crimes using legal guns is minuscule compared to ownership.
The "gun crime" stats often used are highly misleading.

I'll answer the Australian gun control assertion like a liberal would answer a conservative quoting real facts.... by saying.... Yeah But ...... I don't agree with your facts ...so I'll disregard them and them and call them racist.

I had someone toss crime stats for Denmark at me once. DENMARK!? I asked how many black people lived in Denmark.

They did not appreciate that question at all!

Same goes for the Bernie supporters who point to socialistic programs in those Scandanavian countries. Hey socialism works in Sweden! Durr. Err. We have more people in one state and more "diversty" in that state than your entire country. Texas is bigger than Europe and California has a bigger economy. There are very different regions of American with subcultures and more large urban cities. It's far more complex period.

Exactly! Don't compare American to Japan's…. a nation where it's a tradition to gut yourself if you bring shame to your family. If that was an American tradition, the Kennedy's would be extinct and the Clintoons would be long forgotten.
