Soft tissue has a specific meaning in some circles. It generally means any injury or part of the body which is not bone. So muscles, tendons, sinew, etc. all make up soft tissue.

If you tear a shoulder or a knee, a doctor would call that a "soft tissue injury".

My my interpetation is that the round was stopped by the muscles and connective tissue in his face but I did not read the article yet.
