    Buckshot/Birdshot at Public Ranges

Brookhaven is a no (though I heard rumors of a Birdshot patterning area? Not sure where)
    Islip is a no

What about Calverton? Any indoor range that doesnt require a hazmat suit that does?

I think Brookhaven has a patterning board by the skeet & trap area. I've shot birdshot at Calverton at the shotgun/pistol area.

I don't think that would be an issue at Calverton.

00 buck is ok at Calverton at the 50 yard targets.

There's a movable target in the shotgun area but Harry only wants that to be used for birdshot. He gets real pissy when people use the moveable target for buck and slugs. He's worried about ricochet.

How do I know? I was there a few years ago on a dead week day patterning buck and he told me to stop.

Birdshot is fine at Calverton. Use it on the shotgun side though. Same with buck. Slugs can be used on rifle range

                Slugs only at Mitchell Field.

@ 50 yards, 00 buck will stay around 20-30" if aiming at the center of a target

When I shoot bird or buck at Calverton, I grab a bunch of unneeded cardboard boxes, staple targets to them, weigh them down with some rocks, and place them at whatever distance I want. The movable target has always been occupied by another shooter, and I'm not slinging shot at 50 yards. The RO on that side is totally cool with it. Obviously, I throw them all in the trash when I'm done, or if they're still in good enough shape, I offer them to other shooters before I leave. I'll have three to five boxes at 7 to 20 yards or so. Works out great.

More often than not, I've been pretty near the middle of the shotgun/rimfire line. Nobody else minds at all, but I have heard "Hey man, good idea." more than once. I've also brought a few rubber reusable targets that I got at Cabela's. They tumble and roll around when hit with shot. The RO just asks that I put them out a bit further, so I toss them out about 25-30 yards - and he said shot only, no slugs for those. Wouldn't want a ricochet from shooting a slug at a target on the ground.

The patterning area at Brookhaven is all the way at the far end, past the trap and skeet range, you go down the road to it in your car. They also sell patterning paper targets if you don't have a large cardboard board or target with you. There is a fee, ask inside the range office.
