  • Gun grabbers’ next target: Gun-owning seniors

A professor at Johns Hopkins University is urging lawmakers to consider creating new gun laws which require American senior citizens to take competency tests to prove that they are stable enough to own firearms.

According to Shannon Frattaroli, PhD., the new requirements are necessary due to rising dementia and suicide rates among older adults.

“So much of the dialogue around guns in this country has been around crime, and lately, mass shootings. And the older population is not part of that. But when you look at the suicide issue, it’s impossible to ignore older Americans,” the professor told New America. “With that in mind, any conversation about guns has to include a conversation [about] gun ownership among older adults. There’s definitely more to be done on that issue in the United States.”

The academic also said older adults should consider weighing the risks against the benefits of gun ownership.

“Older adults need to consider the risk whether an actual home invasion is likely to occur, versus the likelihood that the [older] person would use that gun to do harm to themselves, or a grandchild would find that gun, or they would harm someone coming into the home who’s not there for a home invasion, someone there for a legitimate purpose like a caretaker,” she said.

Frattaroli continued, “The unintended and tragic potential family impact is much greater for older people than that scenario that the home would be invaded in the middle of the night and they would need to ward off that criminal with a gun.”

Earlier this year, the White House announced that it was working with the Social Security Administration to “begin the rulemaking process to include information in the background check system about beneficiaries who are prohibited from possessing a firearm for mental health reasons.” The move would expand the NCIS reporting to cover all of the nation’s seniors.

If it comes with a requirement to re-test their driver's license and to disable their left blinker when they are in the passing lane at 50 MPH, then I might support it.
Know your rights/Refuse peacefully to consent to a search /Ask if you are free to go or are being detained/Even if you are not doing anything wrong the 4th Amendment protects you against unreasonable searches/Never say anything to law enforcement even if you think it will help you/If questioned you should clearly and unequivocally request that you would like to have an attorney present and defer any questions until then/Never go to prison because you are afraid to go to jail.

Many more seniors, many more every demographic die from suicide by taking a fistful of prescribed meds and just going to sleep. Nothing in the Constitution about Vicodin or Morphine. Terminal patients are even given buttons to push pain meds toward the end and use that to OD themselves....and good for them if that becomes their choice.
These assholes can't get enough of meddling and controlling the lives of others.
Leave my eff'ing guns and my Vic alone

Lets ban garden hoses, auto exhaust, sweat socks that can be used to pack a hose into an exhaust pipe, kitchen knives, windows and rope too.

SMFH for like the twelfth time today.

I think criminals should have to take these test first.
Fucking assholes want to take older people's protection. They will weigh out the risks and decide if you are allowed to protect yourself when u r older. Never ends. Older people are much more dangerous behind the wheel unfortunately
                let's make america great again

"Gee officer, I would love to give up my only means of protection but damn, I secured them so well that I can't remember where I put them right now. Check back with me in a year or so, I'll have to think about it for a while"
                  Jackasses!

Give peace a chance, I'll cover you in case that doesn't work out.

LIBERALISM should be classified as a MENTAL DISORDER!

This is an extension of the democrats' push to redefine "mentally competent". They want to label all veterans as unfit for firearms ownership either by using PTSD as a reason or by claiming all vets are potentially violent due to the chosen profession and training. Aging seniors out of the 2nd Amendment is certainly right in the democrats wheelhouse.

Yeah this election is certainly a good time for gun owners to vote third party. (sarc for the slow kids)
Exercise the Bill of Rights. It's good for your Constitution.

Hence one reason I've been saying for a long time to tread softly on the issue of mental health/illness.

BTW, this is also part of the U.N. international small arms treaty - that no one over the age of 55 (I think) should be allowed to possess a firearm because age makes them too infirm to safely operate it.
I am not armed out of fear of who's in front of me.
I am armed out of love of those behind me.

Anyone who says money doesn't matter to them is either a FOOL or a LIAR or BOTH!

Is that true? I have not heard that little gem before. As an aging population, I'd imagine just the boomer population alone would have the votes to put Trump over the top because of crap like this. Aside from the obvious gun specific concerns, how is this not blatant age discrimination?

It's the U.N., the unaccountable world government. Total power can do what it wants.

You already see a part of that in effect with the Obama administration saying that if you have someone else receive your SS on your behalf to manage your finances you can't own a firearm. No one mentions there are people in their 20's and 30's that can't balance a checkbook either!

The UN is a fuck bucket of incompetence, anti-American incompetence. Barry and company have been a train wreck for sooo many groups of people in this country, no question. The 55 and over incompetence argument almost appeals to me to be honest. We boomers and whoever else that would outrage might finally feel the hand up their ass if the message was we are all incapable of owning basic human rights.
It is tragic that there are even conversations like this one taking place, we have slid so far down the rabbit hole at this point nothing surprises me anymore.
