    One general purpose Rifle

Just for fun. If you could have only one rifle for basically hunting anything from smaller game, deer, black, bear, mountain sheep and elk, not counting brown bear or bison what would you choose? Rifle type, caliber, glass( if any) and why.

Can't really go wrong recommending any rem 700 in 308, I like stainless with a synthetic stock.
I personally like FFP vortex glass, 4-16x40 or 50mm. Light weight, easy to carry around.
I bench shoot, but I'm pretty happy with it out to 200.

            Just for fun, you say...............................
            General purpose.
This is subject to change every five minutes, but right now I'm thinking the Styer Elite in .308 with a forward mounted Burris 2x7.
Come back in an hour and you may get a different answer, but that remains one very useful all purpose stick.

Any 308 or 30-06 bolt action rifle with iron sights is a general purpose rifle.
Everything else in any oddball caliber is a range toy.

I don't hunt so I wouldn't limit a "general purpose" rifle to one that's mainly suitable for hunting. I would say one rifle that's suitable for everything but may not be the best at anything in particular. If the emphasis is on hunting, it would be a bolt gun. But for greater versatility and rate of fire, it would be semi-auto with a detachable mag.

Modern semi-autos have become so accurate and reliable, they rival bolt guns and why give up rate of fire? You may need it and if you ever do, there will never be anything more important. If size and weight are your main priority, an AR, Mini-14 or something along those lines. For a bit more firepower, something in .308 like an M1A. Maybe an AR in .308 is best of both worlds.

But if there was one gun to rule them all, we wouldn't own so many and we could all save our money for ammo and hot sauce.

                        All good choices, no doubt.
I have two choices that are battling for the top slot in this competition. A M1A( irons) .308 and a Browning Stainless Stalker( VX3) 7mm rem. As much as I like the M14 platform it's gotta stay in the safe. At my age I welcome a scope and my M1A doesn't have one. I also choose the 7mm over the .308. It's s harder hitting round that shoots a good deal flatter and retains energy much better at far ranges. The rifle is also lighter, shorter and more weather resistant.

Any bolt action 30-06 with iron sights . The 30-06 carries a wide range of bullet sizes for what ever you're hunting.
