  • in holster mag change?

Yesterday [an instructor] tried to get me to perform an in holster mag change. I refused because to me that is much less safe than having the gun up in my line of sight and controlling it. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been 'instructed' in this type of mag change.

Well the way I see it nothing can pull the trigger so the gun can't go off. Worst case you don't seat the mag fully.

That was his take, that you can't pull the trigger if it's in the holster. I know there are lots of idiots out there but [so far] I'm not one of the idiots who pulls the trigger when performing a mag change...
I wear at 4 o'clock and am not particularly flexible so I'm much more likely to have an accident, including shitting myself, by trying to twist around to conduct such an operation.

Just wondering if anyone else had been instructed in this "unusual" manoeuver.

This is standard practice. There is nothing wrong with it. I do this and teach it.

I do like that you refused to do something that you were uncomfortable with. Kudos.

Its referred to as an "administrative reload." As long as your magazine release button is exposed/not covered by the holster, its a pretty safe way of topping off a magazine or removing the mag before removing a chambered round.

This is taught by many a police departments, including NYPD.

I've never been taught or told to do it but I do it all the time.

And I always feel like I shouldn't for some reason.

This is also done in "one hand mag change" training.
