    .45-70 Loads

Okay, I need some advice. I picked up some IMR 4198 to hand load some 45-70, but the recommended grains is 30. It doesn't come anywhere near filling the case. My 300 WM gets ~70 grain loads of a different powder (I understand that means literally nothing!!) but I thought that all loads at least came close to filling the case to minimize the room for the air in the case to compress prior to expelling the bullet (which seems like it will reduce the effectiveness of the charge).

Any help here? Should I just load it and set the proper bullet height and be done with it?

Very helpful, thank you sir. I am using a 405 gr cast lead flat nose. I'll adjust to 45 gr and go from there.

"What gun?" Is also vital information when discussing .45-70 loads.
