First Look: Smith & Wesson M&P45 Shield

Smith & Wesson announced the introduction of its M&P Shield in .45 ACP at the opening day of the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibitions. The M&P45 Shield version joins its smaller-caliber cousins in 9mm and .40 S&W in the Shield lineup.

“Our new M&P45 Shield takes personal protection to the next level by offering all the M&P features our customers have come to trust, combined with .45 caliber power,” said Jan Mladek, general manager of the M&P brand. “Well over one million consumers and professionals have chosen to ‘Shield themselves’ with the slim, concealable and powerful M&P Shield pistol. The new M&P Shield in .45 Auto provides that extra level of confidence.”

The M&P45 Shield is light, with an unloaded weight of 20.5 ounces. It’s also small in size, featuring a .99-inch width and an overall length of 6.45 inches. Barrel length on the M&P45 Shield is 3.3 inches.

The new Shield also comes with an upgraded grip texture and features front cocking serrations. On the outside of the gun, shooters will find a takedown lever, slide stop and a magazine release. Consumers will have the choice between options with and without a thumb safety.

The M&P45 Shield comes with two magazines: a flush-fit six-round magazine and a seven-round magazine with an extended base plate. Suggested retail price on the pistol is $479.
