    Ruger 22/45 Lite Issue

Some of you may have saw my post on another forum but figure'd I'd ask/post the status here...

I wanted a Ruger 22/45 Lite... so I ordered one from my dad in Florida... thing has a threaded barrel so he pinned a compensator on it for me before shipping it... and.. here is that update:

Soo pistol arrived at DSI today... looks really cool. My father pinned the compensator on it (he was going to weld it but it's an aluminum compensator, aluminum frame... difficult/messy to weld). DSI can't do the transfer however because it would be their name on the paperwork and they are not confident it's 100% NY legal.

Pins in there but it's REALLY in there my dad says, he compressed the pin after installing it so that it can't come out without drilling.

It is a steel barrel but there would be no way (from what I can tell) to weld it, because you can't get to the barrel, as there is an aluminum frame around the barrel. The barrel is where the threads are.

I emailed DSI to find out if they'd have a way of welding a steel compensator onto it, but again, not sure how they'd do that since the aluminum frame covers the barrel.

I don't want to have the aluminum welded unless it can be done so very neatly/cleanly.

I could not find anywhere in my research about having to have it pinned AND welded. I know DSI needs to cover themselves. $25 to risk one's firearms license... can't blame them there... but maybe there are some other dealers who have had more experience in this that are on this forum that can weigh in.

I mean, the damn things pinned, that essentially makes the firearm no longer have this part of the SAFE act:

"A threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward hand grip or silencer"

Being the threaded barrel has now been "fixed"... not sure, im not a lawyer...

any input here from you guys? Right now I have a few emails out to folks to see what they can do... last resort is

    1) Keep it in FL as my toy when I go down there
    2) Have my dad sell it after he removes the compensator

      ^^^ This!!!!
Maybe DSI could inquire about the legality of the handgun with Troop L. They seem to be cozy with each other these days.

Asking DSI about gun laws is like asking Casey Anthony for advice on child care.

Look at a Tac Sol Pac Lite. They have a pressed in pin that can't be removed without destroying the comp and possibly barrel. Is the comp aluminum like a Tandem Kross or Tac Sol? Just have someone Tig weld over the pin.

It's the Tandemkross Gamechanger yes... that in my eyes would work (but DSI said it has to be pinned AND welded, all around) - man not a lot of DSI fans here... I like the guys at DSI, always friendly, good prices, never have issues with them (I've known them before they opened the store so maybe I'm biased?) anyway... let's not turn this into an FFL bashing thread, that's not fair...

Volko in your experience would you accept this transfer? You are not really close to me, pretty far actually (you are up there in Port Jeff right?) but if you can work with me maybe earn yourself a new customer.

I'm told the issue with welding is that it'll leave a lot of markings since the weld is basically on the finish/outside of the pistol now... I'd like to assume that pinning is legal but who knows.

One FFL I emailed recommended I call NY State Police in Albany, anybody know what division/who exactly I should talk to up there? Even if they say "ohh yeah it's perfectly legal" I doubt it'll change the current FFL's mind.

Why not epoxy the pin? Where in the law does it say it needs to be welded? Is dsi making up another law?

doesnt the PLB inspect it as well?

That's what a well respected dealer said who deals with modifying Rugers (he's not a NY guy). Drill it, pin it (leaving a gap) and fill the gap with JB weld.

That's what I said, to DSI, about PLB would make the call when I go for my ammendment... but i'm at the mercy of the FFL who has it... I emailed them, asking about JB Weld, if they are a no go... I'll see if another FFL locally will put some JB weld over the pin for me for a bit extra and then use them for the transfer (and honestly some future business, i throw my business to people who can help me)

If they don't want to work on it (but will accept a transfer) i'll just have it sent BACK to my dad, who will fix it a bit, and then send it BACK to a different FFL.

I mean, this is what we do for our stocks. Drill, Pin, Epoxy over it... it's what some of us did on our AR15s as well... drilled the mag release and filled it with JB weld to make it legal (which I then broke off when I put a Thorsdon stock on, but i had to actually break the damn button off, the jb weld was hard as a rock)

yah, what Malaka said. Sorry Vycor

Does Jerry's in Islip do pistols? I believe he does. He also has the best phone number in the ffl game. 631 410 4473 It's literally one of the few phone numbers I have memorized.
