It was an NYPD 5946 and he could shoot incredibly well with it. I couldn't believe his speed and hits - and he was super humble. I tried his gun and although I couldn't shoot it like he did, the DA trigger wasn't too bad at all. I later became friends with that guy who later became the Captain of the NYPD Shooting Team, lol. Some/many here may know him - he's a wonderful guy. From then on I wanted a 5946 but never ran into one until now.

But I also really like the newer M&P guns.
LI Gun Source had one of the compact 9s, I forget which model theres like 50 different ones, for like $350 not too long ago. I said I would come back. Should have bought it on the spot I went back a week later and it was gone.

Wow! Do tell. What does that mean? The first one ever issued? The first version? Does it have provenance?

provenance.. yes. My grandfather was a NYC cop in the 20's. I mean 1920, not 2020. His 1st issued weapon was an engraved billy club. Eventually NYC became too dangerous, and officers were issued police revolvers. .38 S&W. When my grandfather was in his golden years, very golden.... no one in my family had a pistol permit. and I was the only one that had an interest in this hobby. So I applied for my permit 30 years ago, took a few months back then. and I took ownership. I shoot it on occasion. just because. Otherwise, I'm a deer rifle guy.

          Very cool history!

What I meant was is there any paper trail saying that the gun was issued/used as a service gun, police records, etc., as opposed to a 38 S&W sold in a shop.

Here's some Wiki info - I have a book on this somewhere......

In 1896 Commissioner Roosevelt authorized the purchase of a standard issued revolver for the NYPD. It was the Colt New Police Revolver in .32 Long Colt caliber. He also instituted required firearms training including pistol practice and qualification for officers. In 1907 the Colt Police Positive revolver in .38 caliber was adopted by the department. In May 1926 the NYPD adopted the .38 Special cartridge as the standard issue ammunition for the department and started issuing its officers the Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver and the Colt Official Police revolver.

Can you post pics of the 1920's gun?

I have my grandfathers badge. and his badge # is engraved in the handle. That's all I need for family history. There is no paperwork per-se.
I do know NYC PD has cobris records, because it was required when I took ownership. Remember cobris.. they have my shell casings somewhere.
