    Elephant Gun

In my quest to talk more about guns, here's a cool rifle. Literally an elephant or rhino gun. Certain members will know it for its giraffe-killing ability. The .458 would probably pass through a giraffe and kill the giraffe behind it too. (bonus !)

Winchester Super Express made in the USA, .458 win mag

Notice the front and rear sights. The assumption is you can see the game you are hunting with this rifle without a scope. The game is large enough and slow enough to use iron sights to hunt it.

Just fun to see, since we rarely hunt elephants and the woolly mammoths left when global warming began a few thousand years back.

Can it take down the ever elusive, sneaky, treacherous RINO?

Every year at the gun show in Hauppauge there's a guy selling a Weatherby in .460 Weatherby Mag. I really want to shoot one of those, just once.

          No sir.
It's would not go through a giraffe. It's the perfect dangerous game round.
          It's big, powerful and slow!
          Which is important.
Too fast ( which would go through the evil dreaded demon giraffe) and a round may break apart on impact of a dangerous animal such as an elephant or rhino.
Too fast and it would possibly punch through a dangerous animal like a lion.'That's what this round was made for, dangerous game; Elephant, Rhino, Hippo, Lion, Tigers etc.
          It's a man's deoderant.

On a very pleasant note, shooting a giraffe in the face with a .458 magnum would probably cause a mist of giraffe brains and blood as it's entire head disappeared.
The only round better than full automatic belt fed weapons for giraffe in the face shots.

Express sights as they're called are for the purpose of getting a fast shot on a quick charging dangerous game animal. And they are far from slow!. When you have a rhino, water buffalo, lion, or even elephant charging at you, they cover ground mighty fast. And a lot of times you won't even see them, lions for instance, hidden in the tall grass getting ready to lunge at you. And having a scope, which not only can fail at the most inopportune time, is slow to acquire the target on something coming at you quick, can be the difference between your life and death.

These bullets I believe do not expand. Shot placement is crucial

Depends on the loads. Back in the day asqaure use lf to make three loads- solid, soft point with penetration and a soft soft load.

458 win mag is big by us standards but not a particularly big African cartridge. The 416 rigby et al are preferred

Having recently been in a Kawasaki Mule and crossed paths with a rhino at full gallop after dark, it's amazing just how fast these animals can move all that weight.

Recently let my .458 Browning find a new and hopefully, better home.
It was sad living in the dark safe.
I will tell you, it was one hell of a wake up call when the firing pin hit the primer.
