A bit of copper is good for the barrel, it fills in scratches and tool marks. A hunting rifle may have how many rounds through it during the year, 20 or so?
I wouldn't go crazy cleaning copper out completely. A few wet patches of Hoppes, dry the bore, and some wet oil patches.SHADAP VARMINT!

I use my Savage .223 as my range and fun gun and probably put about 50 - 60 rounds through it in about an hour or so. I clean it patches every time I get home from the range and I use th copper brush maybe every third or fourth cleaning.
Hope that helped.NRA Lifetime Member / NRA RSO & Certified Basic Pistol Instructor

I use Hoppes for copper every once in a while. I wet the bore with a patch and leave it for a few days. Then, what comes out then is green, so I figure it must be doing something.Give a man fire, and he stays warm for one night. Set a man on fire, and he stays warm for the rest of his life.

Did that once for a good shooting Mosin, which then shot like shit until I put about 50 rounds through it.SHADAP VARMINT!

For a hunting rifle, you don't need a spotless bore. In fact, you want a fouled bore before you go hunting, for 2 reasons.
One is a newly cleaned bore will shoot slightly different than a fouled one.
And two, a newly cleaned bore will smell of chemicals, and possibly scare away animals like deer who rely on their nose to survive.Evil beware, Postal Bob is here!
