Would one of these matches be appropriate for first time High Power shooters?

Hello Mad Russian, Yes that AR is fine. Current NRA rules as well as CMP rules have changed for 2016. You can shoot irons or up to a 4x scope in H.P. matches.

            Hello E,
If you have never fired in an "across the course" match, it would be difficult to do without at least attending a match as an observer first. I would have you observe on the line to see how the match runs as well as send you to the pits to learn target pulling and scoring. We do provide "coaching" by our block officers at our matches for new shooters and I am sure you would be able to get through it safely if you returned to shoot at our July match. If you do decide to come out on Sunday to observe, be sure to arrive no later than 7;30 as the gates to the club will be locked down at 7:45. bring eye and ear protection as well as a sandwich in case you need it.
I hope you will join us.

This is 'across the course" High power competition. most people shoot Service Rifle (AR, M1-A, M1 Garand) however you may compete with a match rifle (bolt action) as long as it is capable of being loaded with five rounds from a stripper clip for the rapid fire stage of the match. Go to you tube and you will see videos of High Power competition to get a better feel of what is involved. You shoot from standing (slow fire) , Sitting (rapid fire) Prone (rapid fire) and prone (slow fire)
