A Florida mother is facing felony child abuse charges after police said she forced her 15-year-old son to burn his hands on a kitchen stove as punishment for stealing her marijuana.
Zayma Zurineth Flores, 34, from Orlando, appeared in court Monday on charges of child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
“My heart, it hurts. Very painful to hear,” neighbor Kislene St. Hubert told NBC affiliate WESH, adding: “That’s terrible. That’s not a proper way to discipline a kid. No.”

Police said the teenage boy’s stepfather noticed “a bag of weed” was missing from a cabinet underneath the parents’ bathroom sink last week and, when he questioned the teen, the teen told him he took it and sold it to a friend, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The teen told police he stole it because his sister told him she had gotten it from a friend and stashed in their parents’ bathroom, and he did not want her to use it, according to the report.
However, police said, the girl later told them she had lied to her brother. Police confirmed to The Washington Post that it belonged to the mother.

Police said Flores was angry that her son went into her room and stole her marijuana, so she took him to the kitchen and instructed him to “burn his hands as punishment as she watched,” according to the report.
The report stated that the boy had blisters on his palms from the burns.
Police responded to a call Sunday from a Florida Department of Children and Families investigator and took Flores into custody. She has since been released on bond, according to online booking records.
Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Jessica Sims told The Post that the department has opened an investigation and that the children have been removed from the home and placed with family members.
Flores’s public defender could not immediately be reached for comment.
