Bronze Medallions Stolen from Indiana Veterans’ Graves

β€œPeople don’t have any morals anymore, apparently,” American Legion Post 83 financial officer James Hiles told the South Bend Tribune, neatly summarizing the case of over 300 bronze medallions stolen from the graves of military veterans in Patton Cemetery.

Perhaps even worse, the thieves aren’t after the bronze medallions, which would be too easily identifiable to fence. They just want the brass fittings that hold the medallions. The fittings are said to be worth only $35 each. SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER

β€œThe bronze medallions listing the war and branch of service a veteran served are pulled out of gravesites,” the Tribune reports. β€œThe thieves are then separating the bronze medallion from a brass fitting that holds it in place, selling the brass piece and throwing away the bronze medallion, police suspect.”

A pile of almost 80 discarded medallions was found in the spring, on the far side of a fence near the Civil War section of the cemetery. Some of the vandalized graves actually date back to the Revolutionary War.

With these cases of vandalism skyrocketing, Post 83 is adopting a strategy used by other American Legion posts facing similar crime waves: replacing the brass fittings for stolen medallions with aluminum and steel fittings that have little value as scrap so they won’t be appealing to thieves.

β€œClose to $2,000 dollars has already been raised and donations can be directed to the American Legion not just to replace the missing markers but to purchase ones for future veterans,” the Tribune writes.

Alas, vandalism against the graves of veterans is far too common, with a spike in such crimes typically occurring around Veterans Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Some of this year’s outrages were perpetrated against very old gravesites, including others of Revolutionary War vintage, as with the Patton Cemetery in Indiana. Read More Stories About:

    "vandalism against the graves"

Disrespect doesn't come much lower than this.

Hopefully the local pawn broker calls the cops when these show up. Lock the perps up, fuck 'em.

Has been happening here for years. Has gotten to the point that those familiar bronze medallions for military, vets, FD, LE, KofC and many other orgs are now just crappy plastic.
The junkies and skells steal them for the mongo, the punishment should be loss of their thumbs.

There's no realistic threat of punishment. Thank a lib.

God and nature occasionally offset some of the low lifes of the world. Would have been better if an Eagle ripped one of those pieces of shit's eyes out, but I have to hope that one day, maybe not on this earth, the scum will get their due.

Hopefully when these POS try to scrap the brass they will get caught. Most scrap yards watch out for this sort of stuff, they do not want stolen goods in their yards.

I would prefer their punishment was to put them on the front lines without guns and let the enemy wipe them out until they're out of ammo and then send in our real troops to clean house.
The escape is nowhere near complete. The inventor of LIBERAL fishing. (soon to be seen on ESPN 45 because the 44th never worked.)

Haven't scrapped metal in a while but at Gershow you need a numbered sticker and have to be registered with them to scrap. At PK Metals when you weigh in you have to give them your license. There is always someone watching what you pull out of your truck or put in the bins. If you come there with a bunch of brass plated someone will see them and make an inquiry. They do not want stolen goods on their site.

PK? Where's that? Ive been going to 2bros. If I can go somewhere that's American staffed, I'd be happier. Only other 2 places I know near me (south shore nass/suffolk border) don't pay much. ....HRM, just remembered gershow..... I'll have to try them next time.
