Gun Shop Reported ‘Suspicious’ Omar Mateen to FBI

Robbie Abell, owner of a Florida gun shop, says he alerted authorities that a suspicious man had come in asking about body armor. Five weeks later, Omar Mateen – equipped with weapons he bought at a different shop after Abell’s employees refused to sell to him – killed 49 people and injured as many at Pulse night club in Orlando.

UPDATE: Abell has since confirmed the agency he contact was the FBI.

The Wall Street Journal quotes Abell as telling them that his store, Lotus Gunworks of South Florida, “shut him down on all sales” after be began asking bizarre questions about body armor and bulk ammunition. “The questions he was asking were not the normal questions a normal person would be asking… He just seemed very odd,” Abell said. The armor Mateen asked about is not traditionally available to civilians.

Abell noted that he made a phone call during his time in the store, and appeared to be speaking in Arabic. Mateen is from an Afghan family, and his father – a prolific pro-Taliban Youtuber – is known to speak at least two Afghan languages, Dari and Pashto. Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman, identifies as “Palestinian,” which would make her a likely Arabic speaker. She has confessed to shopping for weapons with Mateen.

Abell says his store alerted authorities to the suspicious man, though he did not say which authorities– whether he spoke to local police, FBI, or Homeland Security. Local CBS 12 notes that Abell’s store appeared to be following the procedures “in line with the FBI’s push for people to ‘see something, say something, if they witness anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.”

The FBI had been alerted to Mateen as a potential terrorist in the past. The FBI had investigated Mateen for violent remarks and suspect behavior three times between 2013-2014, while he was employed as armed security personnel at the firm G4S. He was never fired despite being investigated, however, and the FBI eventually dropped their probe against Mateen.

Witnesses speaking to media who knew Mateen throughout his life have consistently described him as odd, unsettling, and violent. Former classmates recall him threatening to kill everyone present at a cookout on one occasion because of the presence of pork meat; a former G4S coworker said he routinely discussed committing a massacre.

Before being killed by police on Sunday, Mateen left several Facebook messages pledging allegiance to the Islamic State, and also did so in a phone call to 911 from inside Pulse.

FBI hasn't been looking to good regarding this piece of garbage. A lot of missed opportunity. Hopefully Comey is so pissed off he'll take it out on Billary.

I'm counting on the FBI, in order to save face, will come down so hard on Hillary, that the evidence will be indisputable. So much so, that even AG Lynch will have to prosecute her in order to avoid being labeled a conspirator.

So exactly what does someone have to do to actually be kept ON the terror watch list. How did this guy ever get off the list ...
When these guys called it in .. Why was there no way to cross reference the fact that this guy had been investigated before...

If I have an unpaid parking ticket that is beyond a certain date..the state is able to hold up my vehicle registration until I pay it ....But in this situation we drop the ball . ??

        Catastrophic failure...

The government has an overwhelming amount of data on us (Snowed confirm this), the problem is that its so overwhelming that they're drowning in it, they can barely handle it all. You'd think its all nicely organized - it isn't.

Shame on our govenment for letting this scum bag slip through their fingers. Someone in the FBI should be called to answer then publicly spanked.

Well when the president and his administration have basically tied the hands of the military and security agencies of this country, what would you expect the outcome to be? I can't place full blame on the FBI. I heard a report(on Mark Levin I believe) that there are more personnel working at the IRS than at the FBI, CIA and Secret Service(I believe this was the third one) combined.

This guy was a US citizen with the same exact rights as you and I. He could have been investigated a 4th time - or a 104th time. He apparently didn't break any laws or there was not enough probable cause to arrest him. I read that the gun store did not have his name nor a plate number when he asked about body armor. And even if they did - what could the FBI do? Put him on a list with the 1000's of others? Pretty soon the FBI will consist of 100,000 agents to provide surveillance on all those that are suspicious.

THIS is one of the problems we have to deal with in a free society. Ether we all have the same rights (except NY gun laws, of course) and people like him get through the cracks, or we don't and you have to deal with unconstitutional stops, detainment, surveillance, etc.

Things have become so politically correct, that people are afraid of stating the obvious, because they may be accused/sued for being a "racist" or "xenophobe".

Tin Foil but to much on this guy maybe they just waited for him to pop to push gun control. This President does more for every terrorist nation then he does for the USA.
