    diesel question, 6.4 Powerstroke

Since buying the Jeep, the gf's F350 stays hooked up to the horse trailer, and sometimes goes as much as 1-2 weeks between uses. When driving it after its been sitting for a bit, it starts off very low on power and the more you try to step on it, the louder the sound of rushing air is. This fades over a short distance and then drives as it should. Is this normal?

Ain't no expert, but it sounds like the waste gate sticks open and then when hot closes and opens normally.

Do you have electric fans or a clutch fan?

no clue. It's a 2009 F-350 King Ranch with 6.4L Powerstroke, so whichever one that has.

That could depend on what packages are on the truck. Pop the hood and take a look. If the fan(s) are completely enclosed in a black plastic shroud with nothing attaching it to the motor, it's an electric fan setup. If there's a large snout connecting the fan to the water pump (usually right in the center of the motor), it's a clutch style fan.

If it's the latter, the fan could be engaging on startup.

Why would a clutch fan matter on a 6.4 diesel? That engine has enough power to overcome any fan induced power loss. I have a computer controlled fan on my Trailblazer, it disengages at certain throttle positions, such as pedal to the metal.

With the 6.4, power is never the issue, its everything else that goes wrong

have the Turbo looked at as well as the FICM. Diesels do need to be ran moreso than gas but if after it warms up all is good, could be a computer item, have the memory read and cleared

If we leave it run for a few minutes, it doesnt do anything. And when I say short distance, I mean a few blocks. Almost feels like maybe its not allowing any boost to build until its warmed up slightly

I had a similar issue with my 6.4, it started out just like you describe, It reared its ugly head on the coldest day last winter and could only run in limp mode...... I thought it was injector or turbos But it was actually the Fuel pump, (which happened (2) times same symptoms with that said, I would say your fuel pump may be starting to go bad, I had Brand new OEM ford ones installed by ford go bad within 2 weeks because it was a bad pump to begin with. I gave up on Diesels as my personal vehicle switched to Toyota, just turn key and go. My Tundra tows my sisters horse trailer with no problem

I've got the 5.7 Hemi in my Dodge, and the clutch fan occasionally engages on startup on it. The amount of noise it generates is surprising, and - despite having 390hp and 407tq, you can feel how much it's slowed down with the fan running. A gigantic propeller trying to turn at 2,500rpm just driving around makes a fair amount of drag.

If it's still slow while flooring it, that's a separate issue. But, if it's just noisy and feels sluggish right after startup, and clears up after a few blocks... That's pretty similar to what happens on mine, and many other Dodge trucks when the fan engages on startup. Obviously the 6.4 powerstroke isn't a Dodge, but still. The clutch fans create a ton of drag until they shut off.

I say it needs a bigger turbo, 100% nozzles, fuel system rods......Nevermind.
