How do I get the Brake dust off my rims?

My wifes 2015 Acura is getting some pretty serious burnt on brake dust on the front wheels. We wash is every 3-4 weeks. Same with my truck and I don't get build up. Must be the Acura pads. Anyway, I was attacking it with direct scrubbing with a brush last night when I washed her car. Still hangs on. I remember when I worked at a dealership in the late 90's there was a acid that the prep guys used. It was pretty harsh stuff but it worked great.

I use 'Greeze-off'...or however you spell it.Go to the brush isle in your grocery store and get a small brush that will fit into the creveces of the rim. Should work well.
I also used the small plastic discs that go behind the rim to prevent dust build up, but they also prevent the brakes from cooling properly.
    Have a nice day.

No joke, the really good stuff you remember is the same chemical as one of the club drugs kids use! My friends found out because their son was ordering cans of it from Europe, where it is still legal!

If they are painted rims, try waxing them. The brake dust wont stick as well

Not sure how you get high off it. Just spraying it on rims could burn your nose hairs. That shit was harsh.

Stubborn stuff that's been on there awhile may need a toothbrush and a follow up.

They mix it with something to stabilize the ph. Don't know what.

We use professional grade wheel acid that is safe to use on painted, clear coated rims, we buy it in a 15 gallon drum, the stuff is strong and will make you cough when using it. Not sure if there is anything close to this stuff on the market.

Once you get it clean you may want to swap over to ceramic pads.

A few things can work, but if it's been years, they will only come so clean. Try the link below. I love P21s - it's expensive, but it's good shit. Others love the Mequires wheel brightener and they say it melts everything away. Just be careful of which product you use on which type of wheel. I've found that extended use of the acid wheel cleaners will make clear coated wheels fail (the clear coat) prematurely. One time use or so it's fine.

You can also go to Detailing Dynamics in Mineola (or order online from them) their wheel cleaner which is PH balanced and works fairly well.

Always be extremely cautious if you have anodized wheels. If you look at them wrong you can mess them up and there's no redoing anodized wheels locally or cheaply. Certainly not like it came from manufacturer.

Safely remove brake dust and protect the wheels afterward with a sealant to make them shine like new. Don't forget to clean the tires too and apply a tire dressing to complete your detail! For more information, check out our Wheel & Tire Guide and our Rims and Tires Ask-a-Pro Blog Posts

After you get them as clean as possible, you can try using a heavy grit clay bar to get the remainder. After using a clay bar on the wheels throw it out (You can probably take a full clary bar and break it into 1/3's and just use 1/3 for the wheels. You will need to polish the wheels with a mild abrasive polish after using the clay. You may not be able to get 100% of the dust out as it may be embedded in the clear coat or paint.

Once completed and as clean as you can get them, coat them or at the very least wax them with a SYNTHETIC product. Carnauba is wasting your time as it won't withstand the heat.

Last step - Get some Akebono ceramic pads and you can thank me later.

Any decent wheel and tire cleaner and a soft brush. The directions usually say to let the cleaner sit for 30-60 seconds before rinsing. Listen to them, it helps. Follow up with the hose and brush.

Amazon. They also make a spray on after wash protectant also. Wheels get less dirty and clean easier. Get a decent wheel brush or wheel woolie set.

This is what I use usually. I just got in Adam's Polish New Wheel Cleaner, and that works very well too, they both change color to indicate the iron in brake dust. I would suggest taking the wheels off and waxing them too at some point.

Also, look into Adam's H2O Guard and Gloss. Best stuff I've used to date by far, easy to apply, and will go on any finish (trim, rubber, wheels, paint, glass, etc.).
