Buying or Leasing a Car Out of State

Anyone have any experience with buying or leasing from a dealer in another state? I've looking at a new car but the one I want in a color combo I like, is rare but there is one in CT. Sadly, that dealer won't make a trade with the local dealer for the car the local guy is willing to send up there. If I were to buy it there I believe I'd have to pay the sales tax to NY when I register it. Is that correct? Does the same hold true when leasing? Any pitfalls to doing so?

I can't believe I am having so much trouble getting someone to take my money. And no, I'm not going to give it to you.

When you take the car in for service from a dealer whom you did not buy the car expect to be treated like a stepchild.

Think he's buying an S5 and with the luxury car brands, I think he should be okay. Normally it's the case, but dealers make their money on their services so he should be okay...of course, I wouldn't be surprised if he had issues getting a loaner.

You are correct on your sales tax assumption - you'll have to pay it at the DMV. I've bought cars and bikes out of state a few times - PA is funny as you have to go to a Notary to transfer ownership (but the notary also issues a temporary registration, so you can drive it home)
NJ is no different from doing it here, get a title and bill of sale, go to DMV.

CT, I don't remember - been a long time. And I've never gone through a dealer.... but I don't think its any different.

The dealer I"m sure can give a temp plate - so be sure to have insurance cards, or have a nearby agent that can give you cards.

Thanks. Is the sales tax thing for leases also?

Yes, I've been looking at the Audi S5 so I'm not worried about service. They are making it hard on me, though. Legend Audi in Amityville screwed me. They told me they could order one in the color combo and trim line I wanted then after two months they told me Audi wouldn't accept the offer. Would have been nice if they told me that a month ago when they had to know. Now there are about 15 in the NE available and there aren't many color combos I like. I prefer it over the BMW 4 series but I am this close to going to BMW. So there's one in CT that has the exterior color I want (Navy Blue/Black & gray interior) or there's another one the dealer in Huntington thinks he can get in Black with a red interior.

Since I don't need a car right now I can wait but I've loved that Audi for years.

Bought my new Ford truck in NJ. No one around had what I wanted and the factory wait for the same configuration was 10+ months. Got a great price, 0% APR through Ford--I used to pay all cash for my new cars, make zero sense anymore. No problem in NJ they even do all the NY DMV stuff and issue the temp plates and you get the rest in the mail. Many big car dealerships out there with lots of inventory and they are used to selling to tri-staters. Yes, pay sales tax to NY when it's reg. The only thing is they don't do the inspection but you get a few day temp. Whole experience was pretty smooth.

No wife, no kids, no mortgage. By definition I am not in mid-life let alone in a crisis. Now, if I had just sent the kids off to college and bought a corvette convertible that would be a different story.

I bought my last car in Georgia because like you, it was the only one with what I wanted around. Everything went nice and smooth, I made the deal over the phone on Saturday, the next Friday I flew down there, and drove it home the following day. The way this dealer worked, I payed the sales tax in my down payment, and they gave me a check to bring home in the amount of the sales tax, to give to the DMV when I registered the car in NY.
