    Engine rebuild

I was thinking of getting the engine rebuilt for my 65 mustang. It has a 86 block 302 stroked to 347..I'm thinking it's a little tired. Does anyone know how much this will cost around? Also, any reliable engine shops.

    thanks

I still do mustang work , but most small blocks by the time you remove disassemble, clean repair and then reassemble you could by a complete new engine .
this all depend on what parts you put in the original engine and why you think its tired ??
did you do a compression test - then a differential cylinder test -- guessing its carbed and distributor ? if so when were these tested
stick or auto and are these good , is the differential good any brakes hanging
or do you just want lost more power and torque
this could be a never ending quest for the ""wholey"" grail of massive power

I can't say I am very experienced in engine building I haven't done any compression tests..I bought the car about 6 months ago. I can show the the list of parts when the engine was built. I put a brand new tremec t5 tranny in before the winter. I notice some oil leaks from the front when running...

I have Merkel race engines in Hauppauge do all my machine work. They are knowledgeable, fast, and priced fairly

      been using them for decades

they used to have the lowest price on nitrous refills too. Not sure if they still do

That sounds like a nimble little package, and a fun ride. How many miles since that orig build?

I second Merkel. I have several friends with Merkel-built engines. Everyone of them happy.

I've used McBetts Racing Engines. Most of the guys running at Riverhead use them every year not to mention many of the fire competition teams. Richie is great and will work with your budget if you have one. This is a great time to drop off as it's racing season so most of his off season work is finished.

I just wanted to mention that your engine may wake up a bit if you put on a fresh air filter. It doesn't look like a wash and re-oil type.

Sometimes we think our car is tired, when it’s not. Over time you get used to that visceral feel of a fast car. Especially if you drive it in the winter with the cold dense air. By the time the warm weather kicks in, you really feel the difference

have you put it on a roller dyno to see if you lost power?….you might pick up a few HP while tuning it there too

You mentioned swapping in a new T5 trans. Perhaps the gear ratios are not optimized for acceleration? A deeper first and second gear would help with snappiness.

Rear end gears would help too. If you're running something that is freeway friendly 2.73 and the like, swapping out rear end gears for something more aggressive (4.10 for instance) would really make a car come alive. With the overdrive in the T5, you won't kill your cruising rpm too much either with those gears.

most t-5 have a steep first gear (3.05-3.35) and 4:10 would be way to much for it

How old are the tires? Maybe you'd benefit with a different tread pattern?

                  possible

standard T5 first gear is 3.35….tremec typically has 2.95

I've noticed a huge difference when I changed tires from those that came from the dealer (while still new) and those I picked on my own.

They also made my 03 Tahoe feel like it forgot how old it was and now likes to scoot.

Some may find it nitpicky but I also strive to keep both tire and wheel weight down without sacrificing quality and durability.
Lower unsprung weight is a good thing.

you seem to have a decent set of parts in the engine
                      to set standards
, compression test fuel pressure test , timing set and checked that advance is functioning .
quick drive to make sure clutch is not slipping and that no other silly drive line issues exist . then to carb set up ( guessing a edelbrock carb ??)

how much of this can you do , ??
what town are you in .

have a few things to finish up and possibly I can take on another small project for now
