    Looking to get a watch

New to watches, only have a nice Movado my gf got me as a gift. Looking to get something with brown leather straps and a pretty decent size face. What do you guys suggest?

Got 2 Tags last year, disappointed with both of them.
Some serious watch guys on here (I'm not one if em).

Are you set on new or are gently used an option? Some great used watches out there.

Open to either. I just want the brown leather straps, other than that I'm open to seeing what's out there. Never really been into watches so I have no clue.

You can switch out the leather strap so don't let the color be a deal breaker.

Do you want battery/quartz, hand wind or self wind?

What style (dress, sport, diver, tactical digital…)? Water-resistance important? How large a dial?

Dress. Battery I guess? Going to wear it with suits so no real need for it to be water proof

With cell phones, the practical wrist watch is slowly going the way of the handkerchief and the fedora. It's now just a pure fashion accessory that is disappearing.

That said, I wear a Victorinix Swiss Army watch every day to work just because I always have. But I kind of like Luminox.

You can't surreptitiously check the time on your cell phone during a work meeting or a date going poorly. I don't have to charge my watch nightly and I'm a lot less likely to shatter the screen of my watch than I am of my phone.

For that price range, how about a Tissot?

I have the PRC200 (although without the leather band) and love it.

This may sound silly, but you need to go look. What anybody else likes might not be for you, and vice-versa. There are watches that will go with a suit, and nicer casual, but even can work with jeans. Then there are ones that would pretty much be only dress, casual, etc. Go look at a bunch of stuff, then come back here and bounce the brands of of us. At least when you know what works for you, there are plenty of people that can let you know their experiences with that brand. Be prepared, opinions may vary, but I think you need to see what you like. There are truly hundreds of styles, and more likely thousands. By the way, $500 Movado is not a bad start for a decent dress watch. But just like everything else, collecting become an addiction.

Absolutely. Some of my friends have watches that cost as much as my Harley - but I don't like the looks of them at all and wouldn't wear them. I think watches are very personal.

I rode today, was running late and forgot my watch. I hate using my cell phone as a clock - and it was in a saddlebag anyway.

And by looking, you don't have to start at stores, you can start on the web, but there is really no way to really tell how much you like it until you strap it on.

Seiko makes all styles of affordable watches. I've bought from this vendor. No problems. They also sell other brands.

Click on the brown "Princeton Watches" for Seikos with leather straps.

Ya, I'm trying to gauge good brands that have worked for others than make my decision from there.

My day to day go to watches are mostly Citizens. Easily within your range. As has been said though, individual tastes and styles will influence the watch you decide on. Pretend the watch store is a LGS, handle everything, negotiate, ask opinions and then go home and research the one(s) you like on the interwebz

Would be easier to shop around online and see what style you are interested in. I purchased watches from jomashop.com. Great place to start your search
