How to stop weeds from growing

Hey guys I have an elderly neighbor that every year I go over and weed an area approx 2 feet wide X 20 feet long going around her garage. The weeds are coming from the other neighbor under the fence and grow about 4-5 feet high. I don't even know what kind of weeds they are. Since its behind/on the side of the garage I want to put something down to cover the soil to stop the weeds from growing. It looks like something used to be there but has deteriorated. I was thinking just cutting up black garbage bags and covering with decorative rocks(they're already there I would just buy a few more). Any suggestions that would work better than black garbage bags?

    1. Cut weeds back.
    2. Spray liberally with round up.
    3. lay down plastic or weed cloth.
    4. cover section with pavers (best) or deep pea gravel (weeds will grow through eventually but manageable).
    5. Respray with round up for any emerging weeds

      Agent Orange
Give a man fire, and he stays warm for one night. Set a man on fire, and he stays warm for the rest of his life.

Use liquid weed killer in a pump sprayer, add a 1/2 cup of flea and tick shampoo for dogs and a golf ball to keep it mixed. Spray directly on the weeds, the soap will help the weed killer stick to the individual weed and won't kill anything else. the Flea and tick shampoo will kill all the insects that it comes in contact with ( I spray it on my lawn and bushes to control the chinch bugs and gnats, it is completely safe for pets and kids). Then apply weed block fabric and gravel.

... and don't skimp on the quality and quantity of the weed cloth.

Destro hit it... and I'm going to try safety42's tick shampoo trick - sounds like a good one.....

Here's the thing - the fabric/rocks will keep weeds from growing UP.... but when bits fall on top they will start growing -you'll just have to pluck them out once in a while.

RoundUp works well..... but since you're planning to cover it I'd use the plant killer Ground Clear for pavement - you don't want ANYTHING growing there.

I covered an area with high quality weed cloth and put rocks over it. And yet, I had weeds! Not as many. but they keep coming.
Dirt and debris fall between the stones and weeds grow. its amazing how when I want something to grow it usually dies but weeds grow like.... weeds

I use TVC ( Total Vegetation Control) from DoMyOwnPestControl.com
                      Really good stuff and has a long residual. You need to also buy and add a non-iconic surfactant for herbicides like this one;
                      http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/no...es-p-1771.html

That's what the dishwasher liquid basically is that has been mentioned. I like to use the stuff they recommend because different chemicals work best with different surfactants.
If the problem is weeds coming from the neighbors, some of it may kill their stuff too, further slowing the growth in your elderly neighbors area.

BTW. Llaara is right, OP is a good person for helping an elderly neighbor.
