  • Just got back...

I put around 1400 miles on my bike this past week+. From LI, to my place upstate for a few days, then met some friends in Lake George and rode there a few days. I used to go up to LG every year for Americade, but it got played-out and it's been 10+ years since we've gone up there. I forgot how beautiful and awesome the region is. One day we rode up to and had lunch in Lake Placid, then rode up Whiteface Mtn. ~240 mile day which is decent for us when we're combining hiking and sight-seeing.

Anybody else here do a summer trip on two wheels?

(Water in middle of 2nd pic is Lake Placid)

Lake placid is beautiful. Wish it was in a better state.

Be safe on your bike. I know everyone is hyper vigilant around here but my father was riding years ago near Lake Placid on a country road. A driver of an old F150 coming the opposite direction fell asleep at the wheel and came into my father's lane. My father got over as far as he could, but he still got hit by the mirror and mirror bracket on his left hand. He had the tip of his ring finger cut off by the bracket and had his thumb torn back by the impact and never did fully regain his grip on the left side. He luckily managed to keep his soft tail upright and pull off the road.

The whole state is beautiful. The problem is the people who run it.

          That sucks.
There's usually a few 'pucker moments' on the bike each trip - due to hail/sleet, bad drivers, bad roads, etc, but luckily this trip was pucker-free.

It almost sounds like if your father was in a car it could have been much worse.

It could have been worse in a car, I am not sure. He unfortunately isn't around to ask anymore.

Been to Lake George and Lake Placid quite a few times. Awesome riding.
I missed the last 4 Americades. First one I attended was 1988 .

Thanks for sharing these nice photos.

I've only been up there during the winter. May have to check it out during the summer as well.

My first was '96, I believe it rained six inches in 6 hours on the way up. We heard it was a record at the the time. MISERABLE. Rained most of the week also. We made 10 out of 12 of the following years. 50,000 to 80,000 bikes is a small rally compared to 500,000+ at others, but it got too much for us. Too many bikes everywhere you rode.

It's an ~8 mile paved road to the top. Easy ride. Vehicles (including motorcycles) are $15 each, riders are an additional $8.

Once you park, you can either hoof it to the castle, then a pretty decent hike to the summit, or you can walk into an about 100 yard cave and take an elevator ~280 feet to the top.
