    Wireless Emergency Alert Program

I was driving on the LIE when I heard the below sound.

It was the LOUDEST sound I ever heard come from my phone.

Traffic then suddenly slowed, and I observed that a SUV struck the divider. I don’t know if the two are related but the sound was quite startling (I am glad I was not performing brain surgery at the time).

When I fished my phone out of my pocket to make the sound stop, I learned that it was an Amber Alert issued by the Pennsylvania police.

I never subscribed to receive Amber Alerts.

It turns out FEMA and the FCC created the “
Wireless Emergency Alerts” program which issues three different kinds of alerts:

    Presidential Alerts – Alerts issued by the President or a designee;

Imminent Threat Alerts – Alerts that include severe man-made or natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc., where an imminent
threat to life or property exists; and

AMBER Alerts – Alerts that meet the U.S. Department of Justice's criteria to help law enforcement search for and locate an abducted child.

I think the program is a good idea (the child was found shortly afterwards in NYC near the Lincoln Tunnel). I just wish I knew about it ahead of time so the sound would not have been so startling.

Below is a link to a description of the program.

I got it too but my phone was on vibrate and when I went to see what it was, it just said"Amber Alert" in the middle of the screen and then it was gone. I never saw the message.

I work nights. Woke me up out of bed and I was throwing the blanket off and rolling straight into a standing position only thinking, "I need to find what's making that SOUND!!!" Then I was like, "How did I end up standing here?"

All can be disabled except for presidential alerts (last I checked)

I found them to be obnoxious and useless..... and could have CAUSED that SUV to hit the divider.

Problem is updating your phone seems to turn stuff back on.

Amber I disabled quickly, they were too many.
Then went Imminent Threat Alerts after earthquake warnings at 4am

Every bodies phone went off at work abound the same time. We couldn't figure out what the noise was. We thought someone knock the PA system of and it was humming with feedback. It's weird that I got the notice Becuase I have all that crap turned off. I know you can't turn the president one off but the others I have off.

It was an Amber Alert from Pennsylvania IIRC. One of my phones went off, the other didn't (the one I'd expect to). I thought it was the fire alarm intercom at first.

I got it too. I wouldn't mind if it was local, but Penn., that pisses me off.

What we really need is a "Camo Allert" to inform the armed citizenry to muster.

Never heard it. Made sure I turned that feature off after the first time all the phone in the house went off all at once.
