I was driving on the LIE when I heard the below sound.
It was the LOUDEST sound I ever heard come from my phone.
Traffic then suddenly slowed, and I observed that a SUV struck the divider. I don’t know if the two are related but the sound was quite startling (I am glad I was not performing brain surgery at the time).
When I fished my phone out of my pocket to make the sound stop, I learned that it was an Amber Alert issued by the Pennsylvania police.
I never subscribed to receive Amber Alerts.
It turns out FEMA and the FCC created the “Wireless Emergency Alerts” program which issues three different kinds of alerts:
Presidential Alerts – Alerts issued by the President or a designee;
Imminent Threat Alerts – Alerts that include severe man-made or natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc., where an imminent
threat to life or property exists; and
AMBER Alerts – Alerts that meet the U.S. Department of Justice's criteria to help law enforcement search for and locate an abducted child.
I think the program is a good idea (the child was found shortly afterwards in NYC near the Lincoln Tunnel). I just wish I knew about it ahead of time so the sound would not have been so startling.
Below is a link to a description of the program.
