New York and Pennsylvania Officials Make Pistol Permit Agreement

New York and Pennsylvania Officials Make Pistol Permit Agreement

    BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -
New York residents in Broome County and those from Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania will be able to hold reciprocal pistol permits.

The Sheriffs from both counties made that announcement on Tuesday. It is based on an agreement reached earlier this year between the Sheriffs of Chemung County in New York and Bradford County in Pennsylvania. Those in Pennsylvania would fill out the same application as if they lived in New York State.

"You have to have a similar document in the state in which you reside, or the county where you reside. If a Pennsylvania applicant were to lose their license for any reason Sheriff Harder would be immediately notified so he could take the appropriate actions on his end as well," said Susquehanna, PA Sheriff Lance Benedict.

Pennsylvania residents who want to apply for a permit in Broome County must either own property in New York or work in New York. If the person only works in New York, the permit would only allow the person to possess the gun at the place of business.

The agreement will begin on May 1st.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder said his office processed 600 permits in 2015. In 2016, over 200 have been or are being processed.
