First I must say by all means I am no expert all this advice came from the great members of this site. Thank you for all that helped. I just thought it would be nice to combine my experience on how I went about it. The work so far payed off and now I'm just waiting hopefully to get my License. I am also new to Pistols and after getting my license my next problem will be what type of guns to get as there are many to chose from.
I'm pushing 50 years old so I couldn't remember my younger days when I had a few crazy moments in my life. So I wanted to play it safe and get all my paper work and information correct the first time.
My first step was to get my past Criminal History. To do this I send for a NYS DCJS Criminal History $50. They sent a finger print card which I brought down to my local police station to get finger printed $10. Then I sent that back and when I received my history I called each court where I was arrested and asked how to get a disposition which cost $10. I also requested copies of the court records. I was able to do by mail. When I received my dispositions from each court I wrote a short letter explaining the instance. These incidents happened over twenty years ago so I did the best I could. Get them Notarized.
I also went to Motor Vehicle to get a driving record abstract which goes back three years they ask for five but thats all I could get. I also listed some of the tickets on a separate letter. I believe that was $15. Get that Notarized.
I also take some medication and asked my Doctor to write a letter that these Meds would be no issue to having or shooting a pistol.
I used local residents as my references as they gave me a questioner that I had to get filled out by two of the three references and they had to get that notarized and send them to Yapank.
Obtaining all this info took about two to three months.
After filing out the application I hand delivered it $10.
One month went by and I received the call for the interview. When going for the interview bring an ORIGINAL birth certificate, proof of address and the money order.
They told me about three months and everything looks good. I was actually thanked for doing all the work in preparation.
