  • Hunting rifle question

The NYS regs say that for rifle hunting with a semi-auto it has to have a magazine capacity of 6 rounds or less.

What about a bolt action? Can you use a 10 round mag?

Same question about a pump action SG.

    Thanks.

I don't see any restrictions other than for semi autos and this applies to big game only. Also the mag limit is 5 rounds not six. One in the chamber makes six rounds. Make the first shot count because after that chances are you'll miss

If you need more than one round to kill a deer you're doing it wrong!
Like Phil said, if you miss with the first round that deer is gone. Even with a semi-auto, unless you practiced shooting moving targets, you're not getting a second shot.

        I figure as much.

Point is some bolt actions with removable mags seem to only come in 10 rounders and was wondering if that's legal for hunting.

Or a pump SG with a fixed 5 or 6 tube magazine.

Most hunting rifles come with a 4 round clip.

Not if I could use all 10 bullets to kill a deah.

And how many in the magazine?

In South Africa, that damn Kudu took a solid hit just behind the lungs and walked away without flinching. The next shot was in the stomach. After that, adrenaline took over and I couldn't hit it for the next couple of rounds. After waiting a bit and re-focusing, I finally dropped him with a single shot to the shoulder. I had a three round magazine, and wasn't letting it get away - it was also the first time I reloaded "combat style". As I was picking up my pile of brass from the bed of the truck, I was thinking to myself, "No, you don't need 10 bullets to kill a dear, but you certainly need 12 to kill a kudu!"

Here in NY, I rarely take ammunition with me. It's just extra weight to lug around.

I've been hunting for 39 years and never got off more than 1 second shot but thankfully the one time I needed it the second shot did the trick.

That is the "only shot": a single shot to the shoulder.
The bullet hits the shoulder bone, the bone shatters into the lungs, heart, and since the shoulder is gone, it drops where it stood. Usually dead before it hits the ground.
And god forbid you were off a little, and it doesn't die with the first shot, since its shoulder is gone, your follow up shot should dispatch it quickly as its not running away.
My Father taught me how to hunt, and marksmanship, and I've been doing it the same way for over 35 years.
I've used the shoulder shot on Whitetail, Mule, Blacktail, Proghorn, Elk and bear.
I know other hunters like the lung shot, or the heart shot, even the neck shot, and that's fine. Whatever is more comfortable for you to take down your trophy. Its all good...
