    Bow speed?

What is meant by a "fast" bow?

Is that how quickly it can be drawn?
Or how much speed it can send an arrow down range?

I have an older MQ1, with the arrows I use, and the tips, I am at about 330fps. It is very accurate and has never let me down. Its way above the norm for an MQ1.

you should look at riser height and draw length, my first bow was a browning alpha hunter , round wheels , 50% let off and 60 pound draw, killed deer very dead at 240 fps , now i have a faster bow and i still limit myself to 35 yards max

Bow speed is meaningless. It is determined by the manufacturer using a (I may be wrong on the inches) 28" bow with 28" arrows. There is nothing on the bow. No sights, silencers, quiver, etc. These things absorb energy. Also the arrow is shot with no fletching. Again, fletching would reduce speed. The "bow speed" is the fastest theoretical speed an arrow could be shot under the most perfect conditions. Real life, it is much slower. A 300 bow is probably closer to 250.

You also don't need anything more than 60# draw. That is more than enough to take a whitetail.

Bow speed sure means alot when you are going for a 40-50 yrd shot
hell even at 10 yrds if your bow makes any noise on release

Speed is pointless if the bow is loud or uncomfortable to shoot. There are bows that can shoot stupid fast, but also require a high draw weight and high let off weight. The higher the let off the more strength is required to hold at full draw which means your arm will start shaking sooner while aiming at a deer waiting for it to stop moving.

You are talking about two different things. Advertised bow speed is what I referred to in my last post. The sound of your bow can be controlled. Albeit with things that absorb energy and slow your bow. I have easily taken deer at 50 yards with a bow that has a long axle to axle and a 60# draw. But it's quiet. My point was that ADVERTISED bow speed is very different than bow speed of the same bow outfitted for hunting. At the end of the day, it's just like most guns, it's not the bow it's the shooter. I have no plans on replacing my 2009 Hoyt with a 60# draw for any of the new goofy stuff. Find a bow that YOU find comfortable to shoot and become proficient with it. Don't buy a bow that the salesman says is the latest and greatest.

                    you are backwards on this
the let off is a % of the draw weight
the higher the let off the less you are holding at full draw
the lower the let off the more you are holding at full draw

Compound bows are rated by brace height. That's the measurement from the string at rest to the rear (closer to the user) surface of the grip on the riser (frame).
The shorter the brace height, the faster the bow. But the longer the brace height, the more forgiving the bow.

Are you planning on using a mechanical release or finger tab/glove? This will should be decided before you buy. A short axel to axel (pulley to pulley) length bow is not finger shooter friendly.
Feel free to PM me if you want more details etc.

I'll probably go mechanical. That's what they recommended at the course.

that's the most accurate way to go.

Go something with a wrist strap for the release. Use your whole arm holding back over just your hand muscles clenching the release. The glove style releases suck when your waiting on Mr. Mossyhorns to show up.
