Has anyone gone on a hunt for excotic animals in Africa or similar...How does it work?

I'm curious as to how these hunts work. I assume in most cases where you are taking a lion, elephant, hippo, giraffe, etc it is a predetermined animal that for some reason is expendable. Being it too old, can't reproduce, takes resources that can be consumed by other animals in the herd whatever the reason.

How do these hunts work? Is there any real stalking involved to find the animal? Do they do something with the animal to keep it in a certain area of a park?

I assume if you pay such a large permit fee for taking a specific animal that you won't come home empty handed. Are you guaranteed to get the animal? Are you hoofing it on foot for days to find that animal or do guys in a jeep drive right up to it and take the animal?

Has anyone ever been or going on one of these hunts in the future? How much do these trips costs?

You pay a lot of money
    Travel there
they capture an animal, tie it to a tree and you shoot it in the face.
they leave the animal to rot and you go home

deja vue all over again. I feel I'm in Canada
    enjoy the veal

I think it was LiChris that recently went on an African safari. Maybe he will chime in.

Sorry I can't give a real answer but ..It seems like you pay a whole lot of money to prepare for the hunt and the trip...pay a whole lot of money to the "local" game wardens, guides and government officials ..then ..you take a picture with your harvest and when you get back to the States... people want to kill you or put you in jail..... but at least you can be a step closer to being able to say ..."I shot that giraffe right in the face."

I just finished reading his posts. Awesome pictures. The price didn't seem that unreasonable to me - $10k for 2 people. He said he is going back in 2 years and a giraffe is on the list. Are different animals more money? I assume certain animals are easier to find which would be cheaper as long as it is not a protected species.

What does it cost to hunt the Big Five?

I would love to go on an African safari one day. Not a hunt, but I have a feeling a hunt is way more intimate than a regular safari where the put you in a safari jeep and travel the same safari roads as every other tourist.

Promise you this is not a troll thread. You all know how I feel about the giraffe thing but I do find this very interesting. I'm a big hiker who has camped a lot and seen plenty of black bears, but I can't imagine camping in an area with lions, cheetahs, etc.

I assume most people here have seen the show The Hunt. It was on discovery or history channel. James Hetfield was the narrator. It was about hunting brown bears in Alaska. I would love to experience something like that.

I'm in for a plains animal. Something with big fancy horns. Maybe I'd do a Zebra, probably not. Lions & Tigers are not my thing. But a fancy exotic deer, or antelope. Something cool like that.
and I'd definitely NOT do pictures. Memories are good enough for me.

what does an African hunt have to do with hunting brown bears?
                        have you ever hunted anything?

You have your panties in a twist for some reason. There was no bs start anywhere.

I brought up the bear hunt because of the show I mentioned. I love the idea of stalking the animal and sleeping "with" the bears. I imagine an african hunt would be similar except with lions, elephants, etc. I would love to go on a safari but I doubt it would we as intimate as going on a hunt. Thought I don't know for sure.

I am very intrigued by the experience of an african hunt. Though I would probably never go on one.

And yes, I hunt. A lot of my posts are related to hunting. I was denied my 1st choice DMP two days ago, but I did get LI. Though I'm not sold yet on hunting here.

Please don't ever compare me to Hillary.
