Democratic Sen. Jon Tester says stiffer gun laws would not have prevented Newtown massacre

A pro-gun U.S. senator from Montana doesn’t think any legislation would have prevented the horrors of Sandy Hook.

Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrat with an “A-”rating from the National Rifle Association, told NPR Friday that tighter gun laws should be met with skepticism and would have been ineffective in preventing the 2012 massacre in Newtown, Conn.

“The gun restrictions that were talked about putting on would not have kept the guns out of that clown’s hands that was in Sandy Hook,” Tester said, referring shooter to Adam Lanza. “There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it.”

Front page of the New York Daily News for December 3, 2015 about the shooting at San Bernardino that left 12 dead at a holiday banquet.

The 59-year-old politician called a 2013 sit-down with relatives of the 26 victims a “tough meeting.”

“I think it’s a no-brainer that we should try keep the guns out of the hands of criminals. Folks who, like I said, court-adjudicated mentally ill and terrorists,” Tester said.

But then he added, “Where is enough enough? Where do you say ‘ok now things are good.’ You’ve got to find the sweet spot.”
