Donald Trump Calls for Police Militarization

BREAKING: Donald Trump Calls for Police Militarization

Subbing for WISN’s Dan O’Donnell, Sheriff David Clarke asked Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump about various law and order issues. [Click hereto listen.] During the course of the interview, The Donald addressed the Pentagon’s controversial 1033 program. A quick history . . .

Starting in 1997, the program has transferred hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ex-mil equipment to some 8k state and local police forces. Per year. Everything from generators to armored vehicles to snow blowers to fully-automatic rifles.

In May 2015, in the aftermath of the Ferguson riots, facing criticism of police militarization, President Obama signed Executive Order 13688, limiting and prohibiting certain types of equipment (e.g., rifles of .50-caliber and higher, tracked vehicles, “flash bangs” and other explosives, and grenade launchers). Mandating better inventory control and after-action reports.

Sheriff Clarke ain’t got time for that. Neither does Donald J. Trump. Sheriff Clarke assumes that Mr. Trump is familiar with the program and asks if he’d rescind the EO, characterizing the equipment involved as “military surplus protective gear, things like ballistic helmets, ballistic shields, equipment to keep [police] and their community safe.”

“I would do that in a heartbeat. I thought it was ridiculous and I think the whole concept is ridiculous of what they did. And I mean all of a sudden people are going to start saying now we feel much better because now they don’t have much protection because that’s basically what you’re saying in a form. But absolutely 100 percent yes.”

As I intimate above, I doubt Mr. Trump is familiar with the 1033 program or the issues surrounding it. This is not the biggest deal in terms of The People of the Gun voting for Mr. Trump — what with his clearly superior position on gun rights and the chances that Ms. Clinton could very well do the same thing.

But anyone wary of the real estate magnate’s [alleged] megalomania should note that he wants the cops to tool up Big Style.

    Just sayin’ . . .

I don't think too many are arguing that police should be well equipped for the threats we face lately (thank you Obama).

I think the issue is these things should be special operations units, not the rank&file "beat cop" as SOP equipment.

And similarly, this type of equipment (and tactics) should be used for such higher threats, not serving warrants on someone with outstanding parking tickets.

I am not armed out of fear of who's in front of me.
I am armed out of love of those behind me.

I think your over dramatizing this a bit. You don't get arrested for parking tickets, yes your car might get towed if those tickets belong to the vehicle. And I doubt you'll see a Cop on a foot post with a 50 caliber rifle and a ballistic helmet on.

LE having a .50 is not the same thing as vehicle mounting it and doing routine patrol. High axle vehicles have proven themselves many times in the hands of LE conducting rescues and accessing areas difficult to get in to. Lots of milsurp has great potential value to LE.
If I get a vote I say let LE and local legislatures jointly decide what is necessary or potentially necessary in their respective regions.
Id rather have 200 M4's in racks at precincts than to wish we had had them the day after they were needed.
We live in a changing and dangerous world, equipment is tools and talking head, uninformed shit stirrers are not the ones who should be making those decisions.

There have been many cases cited of gross over use of police force serving warrants for very minor things (no, I have no links as examples to post).

            You stated "parking tickets".

also do you realize who authorized and writes these warrants? Judges and DA's the police departments don't get to pick and choose which ones some armchair qb might deem minor. They have to enforce them with zero prejudice often resulting with the fallout landing on them squarely while the Judge and DA share no burden about the outcome.

I am going out on a limb and saying it was an extreme exaggeration.

I don't see a problem with outfitting the police. They should have the best gear possible to keep them safe and give them an advantage over criminals. I don't foresee this equipment ever being turned on us (e.g. law abiding citizens), but if hillary gets in...who knows.

Tell that to the law abiding gun owners in New Orleans post-Katrina.

I don't think " military equipment " had anything to do with that. I think N.O. was more of a political/government motivated desicion not a "hey let's test out our new Abrams tank" idea.

Complaining police having "military equipment" is equal to the LIBS saying civilians don't need "military type weapons".
"military" "assault" "high powered" Oh my god the horror!

That was more about the government than police equipment I think, but I see your point.

The old expression: "attitude is everything". Helmets and shields are OK for cops but what they really need is the support of the community and the President of the United States. Until we get back to that, they're still fucked. If Hillary wins, cops are going to need more than helmets.
