NY lawmakers postpone anti-SAFE Act push, citing Orlando

ALBANY - Citing the tragic mass killing in Orlando, a pair of lawmakers have postponed a push for a bill limiting New York's 2013 gun-control law to New York City and its suburbs.

Assemblyman Marc Butler, R-Newport, Herkimer County, announced Friday he would hold a pair of news conferences Monday to promote his newly introduced bill, which would restrict the SAFE Act to only New York City, Long Island and Westchester County.

After Sunday's tragedy in Orlando, Butler canceled his press conferences, one of which was slated to occur outside the Remington Arms Museum in the town of Illion.

The bill's Senate sponsor, Republican Sen. Robert Ortt of North Tonawanda, canceled plans to issue a press release in support of it, according to a spokeswoman. Ortt's district includes all of Orleans County and the towns of Sweden and Ogden in Monroe County.

In a press release Monday, Butler's office said it would have been "simply inappropriate" to proceed with the press conferences.

“I am saddened by the senseless act of terrorism in Orlando that took the lives of 50 innocent people and injured many others," Butler said in a statement. "Right now is a time for mourning and solitude for a community that is hurting."

Omar Mateen, 29, stormed an Orlando night club early Sunday, killing 49 people and wounding more than 50 others while carrying an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun, according to authorities.

New York's SAFE Act expanded its ban on semi-automatic weapons, such as AR-15s.

WTF We hate the Safe act here too in Suffolk & Nassau. NYC has their own dumb local rules to contend with that nearly make the SAFE act moot in NYC anyway,

Sounds like a Fudd type strategy anyway
Fuck everybody but us. As long as we're exempt it's okay.
To be fair, the liberals are completely in control of this part of this liberal shithole so I can understand why they're doing it but it's a bad idea.

Why do we get stuck with the SAFE Act? What the fuck?

I like how the media says cuomo banned AR's when nowhere in the law does it explicitly ban the sale or possession of an AR.

Our representatives should vote against it unless we are included.

                  Once the door is opened...
Exactly why the NRA opposes things that even sound reasonable.. Give an inch, you've begun the end. These scumbags will reword this shit and keep tossing it on the wall forever.. Repackaging in into other bills, tack ins to no related legislstion, and altering how it sounds publicly but it's all the same, ban guns is the end result. Little by little, it will start to stick..

WTF makes LI and Westchester different from the rest of NYS? I get NYC being cut loose because they have their own truckload of laws already and act as a separate entity. Our proximity to the city warrants giving us another long, hard, dry one?
