Andrew Cuomo to DNC: ‘We Fought the NRA and We Won’

A key component of the SAFE Act was a ban on “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines.
Cuomo said, “We fought the NRA and we won, and we outlawed assault weapons to keep them from the hands of mad men who are killing innocents.”
This was a different Governor Cuomo than we heard in the Fall of 2015. The one who spoke on September 17, 2015 was reeling from the gun violence that was shattering NYC just over two years after the passage of the SAFE Act, but he was steadfast in declaring that gun violence was no proof that gun control had failed. Rather, Cuomo pointed his finger at southern states and said their laws were too lax.
On January 4, 2016, NYC officials announced that the cities’ “overall” crime rates fell by 1.7%. But The Wall Street Journal showed that this overall drop masked the fact that violent crimes–murder and rape–were up for the year. Which, at the least, means that men bent on evil will continue to carry out evil whether “assault weapons” are banned or not.
