as of last sunday , the out in the trees sport clays loop is still in the works , no golf carts , no push wheel gun carts to rent , the gun racks are still being built
I did meet Louis , young person who wanted to be our trapper for the day, just to make sure we were 'safe' shooters, as a side I think he was looking for something to do
we were the only two guys there in the mist and rain ...due to a brookhaven noise thing, no shooting before 9 am
Louis and staff, have set up machines at all the skeet and trap fields..counting the trap , high and low house throwers, there are
close on to 6 machines per field, a few of the fields have bunnie / ground clays , sporting clay fer now is , you walk from field to field, no gun racks at the stands, each field has a different set , hand held counter in a plastic ammo box ,
you can get pre paid for any amount of clay counter down cards , or , counter up cards that you pay for when you leave
when Lewis saw we were 'shooters' ; Louis wanted us to try his special sport clay set up , field 13 and 14, which are kinda out in the woods , 6 machines per, some of the targets at 13 and 14 were close
on to impossible because of the trees, speed of clay , clays out to 50 yards ,other machines were a fair throw ,
when Lewis asked about the thrower set up , I told him folks come out to break clays, not to get frustrated ,
Lewis is due for a trip up to Mid Hudson for a learning curve to set throwers
      for the avg. clay shooter
sign in house was clean , staffed with smile people and well stocked with 120.00 per 250 12 ga ammo, gun store priced rim fire, pistol and rifle ammo was on the shelf, normal collection of ear/eye protection and paper targets
over all cost was standard, 45 cent or so per clay, all sorts of 'membership' deals that get the cost of clays down , Joey threw 250.00 for a year membership with 100 free clays
there is no set rule yet, about bringing your own electric or gas power s x s transport

Why on god's green earth did they NOT send the employees up to Mid Hudson INITIALLY to learn and train how to set stuff up properly. SMH.

on staff brookhaven folks can set the basic machines , know the spring set, clear the 'jam' , hook up the battery and the solar panel
my thought is that the sport clay curve has not been cleared as a path for cart use or , thinning of tree branch , as a 2 nd draw back, they are in the land of the bird, bunnie, tree hugger, pine barrens restrictions

I never had an issue with him . As long as you are safe and played by the rules. He was a real nanny though when it came to picking up brass. His cease fires were always too long.

RO's need to walk a fine line between being firm on safety and not treating the customers of the range like they're dirt.

Just the other day I made a mistake, not a critical one (nothing that would have resulted in harm) but a procedural one. The RO decided to go R Lee Emery on my ass, and I didn't appreciate that. I was respectful about it when I said I was confused, but he decided to give me hell because he could and kept going after I apologized. The other RO's were much more balanced about stuff whenever I heard them talk to other shooters.

Unfortunately out here on Long Island our options are limited and these guys know they run a near monopoly, so they can afford to be a-holes and their job probably won't be on the line over it. A lot are former military and some of them get stuck in that role, not realizing the people on the range are the reason they're getting a paycheck.

Speaking of Mike, God rest his soul, I remember there was one distinct moment where he called the line hot when someone was still downrange. The shooters themselves had to call a cease fire.

I've never personally seen anyone treated like dirt, but I haven't been there in a while.
I've definitely seen way too many times when people fucked around, created safety issues and thought they were big balls John fucking Wayne... then wanted to argue about it with the ROs.

I totally agree that there are yahoos out there who go nuts and do stupid things, as well as disrespectful things regarding other shooters. And the RO's definitely do need to be able to take no prisoners with those types when required. One lost customer is better than one serious injury and a lawsuit.

In that sense I can understand the perspective of range management: they'd rather have an OCD range officer than someone who is too lax. But you can't help but think that some of these guys, especially the older ones, get a bit of a power trip sometimes and it comes with no consequences to them.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but Mike made it feel like he was doing you a favor by letting you shoot there. My dad was as careful and respectful as they come, and he was a regular. Mike gave him the Neidermayer treatment, getting bent out of shape if my dad didn't pick up his .22 brass during each cease fire. That had nothing to do with safety at all. It's just attitude.

how many vote do we count;;;as being thankful to
the MSG, basic training instructor, Nun with a ruler, strict parents, some adult mentor along the way
and Mr Forrester, the very 1 st range officer at Nassau County range when it was on Merrick Ave / Front st.
that welcomed a 14 yr old on his bicycle and taught him how to shoot
my vote goes to all of the above

Strict is good if it's fair and done with respect. When someone gets on a power trip, that's not okay. I like to take people shooting who are newbs. If they have a bad experience at the range due to an out of control RO, it's not good ambassadorship for the gun community.

I assume the policing brass routine is to keep idle hands from doing stupid stuff. That is my theory, I'm sticking with it.
ANY violation by ANY person of ANY provision of this section is a class A misdemeanor. - NYPL §400.00(15)
Conspiracy in the sixth degree is a class B misdemeanor. - NYPL §105.00
...nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

I was told by an RO that they want all the brass picked up at every cease fire so nobody will slip on it and fall.

Not really sure, I'll tell you what I observed. Keep in mind I was there function testing and nerding out on Reloads.
They told me in the office about the trees. Also some steels that had been added @ 200.
I saw 2 sets of trees. They are on mobile stands and can be (I assume) moved to whatever range you want.
The only person who fired on them was a RO. It was VERY slow on the pistol line at that moment so no derelict of duty on his part.
The targets on the trees are pretty small IMO. God bless anyone who can consistently ring them at any distance.

Yeah I called the front office she didn’t know much but did say they were adding the trees to the pistol line.

Oh! This would be a gift from the heavens! I’ve been dying to shoot steel at distance (even if only at 200) locally.

Stopped by and shot on Friday. They have two dueling trees set up at 25yards on the pistol line with a single steel spinner target. On the 50 yard line they have a single steel circle as well. They had steel targets set up at 100 yards but sadly assholes who can't shoot already shot the support holding them up. The guy at the counter said he has alot more steel targets that he is planning to deploy both on rifle and pistol.

I looked at the new website but there are no prices listed. How much to shoot either rifle and pistol, and how long is it for?
Lieutenant: You got a pistol permit?
                      Nick Charles: No.
Lieutenant: Ever heard of the Sullivan Act?
Nora Charles: Oh, that's all right, we're married.

If you live in Brookhaven township it's $28 for rifle and pistol combined. It's $31 for out of towers. There usually isn't a time limit unless a huge crowd of people are waiting to get in.

I miss PA reading that. Between 28 and 31 dollars to sit at a bench and not be allowed to stand, kneel or shoot prone? PA we used to pay 30 bucks a year for the WHOLE FAMILY, and it included rifle, pistol, and archery.
