Nothing wrong with a red dot sight on an AK - as long as it's a Russian red dot sight!

What if it’s an American made AK?

Quality red dot mounts are out there. RS Regulate, Attero Arms, Texas Weapons Systems and Ultimak come to mind off the top of my head for quality USA made mounts for any optic. All work very well with various AK makes and models but it comes down to personal likes and dislikes. Obviously, the AK is nowhere near as modular as the AR in any shape or form so expect some adjusting/fitting but that being said Ive had no issues with a few different makers. Also check out AK forum.net. A lot of knowledge there on that platform. Good luck and enjoy!

I have a cheap Primary Arms micro-dot sight, with a Kalinka Optics side mount. It works great, until you have to remove the side mount to field strip the rifle. Theoretically it should maintain zero, but it doesn't.

                  I don't 'do' American receivers on AK's.

My two favorite options for mounting an optic on an ak are the beryl style dog leg rail and the rear sight micro dot mount. Not a big side rail fan, for both aesthetics and function. There are also some really high quality russian optics, i really enjoy the Rakurs PM, tritium powered reticle. For basic red dots primary arms/holosun.

The Russians seem to be using them more and more. Like the U.S., only in specialized units first.....

I put an aimpoint ML2 in an RS regulate mount on my AK. It is awesome.

Any optic will aid. Issue with AK that not every optic sight is easily mountable. Choosing the right sight and mount is a key. Ideally you don't want to disturb the correct cheek contact with the stock, which is not easy. In the case of red dot it might be less important then with any scope with magnification. Magpul stock comes with 3 different risers which helps greatly.
