  • Bayonets, Bayonets!!

I don't call myself a bayonet collector. I'm a battle rifle collector. However, when I have a rifle I would like to know the history behind it. When I've learned the history behind a rifle, I want to dress it up with the accessories it originally issued with. Like the correct sling, bayonet, stripper clip, muzzle device, ammo pouch, bandolier, you name it. The must-have-accessories to me are the sling and the bayonet. Since I have so many battle rifles, I have a big box of bayonets at home. Here let me show you what I have.

From top down, right to left.
    Pic 1
    1. Remington Mosin-Nagant M1891
The Mosin-Nagant bayonet is everywhere. It's cheap. It used to come with the rifle. But this one is not for M91/30. The M91's locking machanism is different. It is with a locking ring. It's worth around $60 to $80. Since I have a Finn captured Remington M1891, I need a correct bayonet. This one is made by Remington in the US marked with a circle R which fetches a premium price. I did pay a premium for it.

    2. Just plain cheap M91/30 bayonet

    3. As above

    4. Wilkinson Pattern 1907
This is the British Wilkinson bayonet for the SMLE No.1 Mk3*. It should be a parade bayonet given that the metal is in shiny white. I bought this bayonet when I just started collecting so I didn't know. But it is what it is.

    5. Remington M1917
A Remington made WW1 bayonet for the Eddystone M1917.

    6. US M1905
Bought it from Freeport gunshow for the Remington M1903A3.

    7. Repro M1 Bayonet
Again, an early purchase when I just started collecting. I may buy an authentic one next time when I go to a gunshow.

    8. M4 Bayonet
For my Underwood M1 Carbine. It is not a WW2 bayonet. But a majority of M1 Carbine went through refurbishment after the war with the bayonet lug added. It's legal to have a bayonet lug on the M1 Carbine in NY as long as the firearm is registered. Or, many just simply take away the bayonet lug.

    1. Mukden Arisaka Type 30
Not an easy find. I have a Manchurian made Arisaka Type 38 so I need a bayonet made by the same arsenal. This bayonet happens to be the same series of the rifle produced at the same place and in the same period.

    2. Nagoya Arisaka Type 30
There are too many series of Arisaka rifles and bayonets. I am far from an expert. So this is a random pick from eBay to dress up the Nagoya Arisaka Type 99 short rifle.

    3. Argentine M1891
The first military general issue smokeless powder rifle was the M1891. The most common M1891 bayonet is with the aluminum grip. Only the earliest 40,000 (1892-93) units were made with brass grips like this one in the photo. Otherwise the later 190,000 (1893-98) units were made with aluminum.

    4. Swiss Model 1899
For the Schmidt-Rubin M1896/11. Not an easy find.

    5. Swiss Model 1889/18
Bought it by mistake. I intended to by it for the 96/11. However, the ring diameters for M1896, M1896/11, M1911 etc etc are very confusing. This one doens't fit for only 1mm or so. Perhaps I will have a rifle for this bayonet in the future, I don't know.

    6. Brithish Pattern 1888 Mk1
Not a common piece. This bayonet was issued with Lee-Metford and Long Lee-Enfield. It was later issued with the Martini-Enfield. I bought the carbine and the bayonet as one package.

      1. Swedish M1896
      For Swedish M96, M38, and Ljungman AG42-B

      2. As above

      3. Egytian Hakim
The rifle itself is "sort of" common. If you want to have one they are always on Gunbroker or other websites or gunshows. But the bayonet isn't. They are floating around on eBay from time to time though.

      4. Swiss Model 1918
Just a common Model 1918 bayonet. BUT, the serial number on the bayonet & scabbard is matching with the K-11 from head to toe. That's what makes it special.

      5. Swiss Model 1918
Another Model 1918? Yes. But this one is with the serial number alll matching to my K-31. It's another special piece.

        1. Russian M1940
An authentic WW2 bayonet for the SVT-40. It came with the rifle. A somewhat rare bayonet and it's very expensive. I got it with a very good deal.

        2. Finnish M27
Collecting the Finn bayonets is like collecting Mosin-Nagants itself. There are so many varieties. This one is for my Finn M27. It actually fits the M39 with no problem. Not a common bayonet.

        3. British No. 4
Just a common spike British bayonet.

        4. French M1956
Almost all MAS 49/56 available in the market comes with the whole set of accessories. It just came with the rifle as a package.

        5. German M1884/98 III
I have a Russian captured Kar98k. A friend of mine went to a gunshow in PA and she spotted a seller had a bunch of them for a nice price. Just told her to grap one for me.

        6. Norwegian M1916
The Norwegian M1894 Krag is one of my favorite rifles. Since the rifle is not common by itself, it took me some time to find the bayonet for it. Finally I found it.

          1. French M1936
Just a spike bayonet hiding underneath the barrel.

          2. French 1886
The French loved this bayonet so much they called it Rosalie in WW1. I always buy the rifle before the bayonet except this one. I bought it because I was so eager to have a Lebel 1886/M93. However, every time the rifle pops up somewhere there's always somebody shows up a moment before me. It's been a year and I'm still searching for a Lebel Rifle.

          3. Repro Finn M1939
The price of the bayonet for Finnish Mosin-Nagant M39 can go up to $500 to $700. Even the repros are expensive. I was lucky to spot a pair from Simpson Ltd for a very low price.

          4. Repro Finn M1939
As above. Bought as a pair.

          5. Spanish Standard Modell
The bayonets for Spanish Mausers are a little confusing. I have a Spanish M43 Mauser I didn't know what bayonet to couple with. Spotted a "M43 Bayonet" listed on Simpson Ltd few years back. I called them but they had no idea what rifle the bayonet belonged to. I bought it anyway. The bayonet is not a tight fit. It wobbles a little when mounted. Then I discovered that this bayonet is for Spanish Standard Modell and M1944 Short Rifle. It fits on the Kar98K though. Collectors call it M1943 but it is not dedicated for the M43 rifle.

            The most recent purchases

            1. Spanish M1913
A bayonet originally designed for the 7mm Spanish Mauser. It was later adopted to couple with the Spanish M43 rifle. So my Spanish M43 has two different bayonets. This one looks way cooler than the other Spanish Standard Modell.

            2. Repro British No. 5 Mk. I
A repro bayonet for the Jungle Carbine. The seller of the rifle just threw it in as a combo. Given that the price of the original is ridiculous I'm good with a repro.

Louie, you need help! No one should have more than 7 bayonets.

Nice collection. And nice posts/thread. I have so many bayonets stored away I have no idea what I have. They don't fit in the safes so I have them in crates all over the place. I will use this thread to help ID some of them, THANKS!
