M1A Range Report. Told you the answer was "both"

As a follow up to my previous post, I finally had the pleasure of shooting "both."
I know the answer is BOTH, but for the sake of discussion, pick one and defend your choice. I know there are all kinds of different models available, but I

Springfield Standard late 1980s vintage with GI components including chrome barrel, fixed mag to make the flash hider and bayonet lugs behave
Springfield Scout brand new NYS compliant version

We walked into our backyard and used our range finder to pace off 50 and 100, and our bench is at 200 yards.
    Iron sights.

Actually, the scout model is my dad's and he shoots lefty

I may need a refresher on my posture. I forgot what @Scharfschütze taught me at the long range appleseed

Oops, I forgot to take pictures of most of the targets haha, but I did include one pic of a target from the fixed mag version, prone at 200 yards. I was happy with that. At that range with iron sights, I was just aiming at the entire target. The cardboard is about 18x24 inches

Pick up a proper Turner sling for prone and sitting positions. It makes a big difference.

I've only had mine to the range once and that was MF. I can't wait to get to Brookhaven or Calverton, and I'm starting to think about getting it scoped.

                    What is the traditional method?

I assume 'traditional' means the glass is over the receiver/action, rather than forward of that with a long eye relief scope, ala 'scout scope'..

Yes and also will be using quick detach mount.

Take it from someone who has gone through 11 M14/M1A scope mounts and get the Bassett High Picatinny mount. You can still use irons and there is plenty of room to top load mags if you're a fixed mag kinda guy.

And there is plenty of clearence so spent rounds do not stovepipe between the mount and receiver. With over 500 rounds shot with the Bassett I have had none and that's a first.

you can also use the smith mount with a sight channel , use ARMS-22 rings as a quick detach set up

Thanks. I will pass that info along to my dad. Right now he has already purchased a bobro mount and Burris scout scope 2-7x32 as inspired by this article by a rural police officer. We shall see what happens.
