    M1A NYSafe question

Would it be legal to purchase a full-featured M1A from out of state as follows?:

    - Receive the rifle in field stripped condition in separate shipments.
    - Add mag lock as part of the reassembly

Done as needed through an FFL for receiver/barrel.

Or you could buy one here with the fixed mag, no? I think Campsite sells them.

I also know you can find the scout model with detachable magazine with no muzzle break (from Springfield so no LGS modification done) pretty easily.

Sorry if my answer wasn't helpful.

I could but….. much to my regret, I panicked and sold my own M1A to a friend out west rather than mutilate it. Yes, I now know I had other options. I much prefer to buy it back (if he'll let me).

If you're friend is agreeable to selling it back to you, have him install the locked magazine prior to shipping.

If not, I believe he can just ship the rifle as is, but the ffl could not complete the transfer until they modify it for you.

Why go through all that crap? Get a spare trigger group and remove the magazine release lever. SA sells replacement levers for $7.00.
When in NY, use the modified group (becomes fixed mag) and when traveling, just switch trigger groups.
Actually, you can change magazines just by removing the trigger group and the mag falls out.

this gets back to my original question. Can I legally buy back the rifle from out of state? If the trigger group is sent separately and I install an appropriately modified version, the rifle becomes legal, but can I receive the parts and do it myself?

Why don't you have the mag release lever removed before shipping to NY? Why cause a problem for the FFL doing the transfer?

Check with the guys at CampSite, they would know and could do the transfer if its legal.

Campsite also has the "kits" to fix your magazine. It's a roll pin, a lever that locks in the mag, and 2 stripper clips.

Is your friend good with tools? Buy the kit from Campsite, send it to your friend, have him replace the mag release lever with the fixed mag adapter(one roll pin), the send the complete rifle to your FFL with a 10 round magazine installed.

ETA: have your friend send you the leftover parts(roll pin, mag release lever, spring), so you can undo the mod when you leave here.
