Winchester 1894 [1955] dumb question

I warned you guys i would be asking dumb question. or 3 Have A 30-30, great shape. Old weaver K 3B-60 scope, Williams mount. DSI looked her over and Bore sighted it.
Said it has few rounds , if any other to sight it in. Ran a patch down the bore with Rand CLP. patch came out the same way it went in "clean"
The straight steel but plate [see pic I hope] has rust in 2 spots, tried to brush it, still looks like crap. Thinking of a wire wheel ,Then Paint or Cold blue ??
Like to put a NON laced sling on it. [ Was told the value was down because of the scope mount, and I am not selling it] So Your in put is well come. On what.
Last one for the day, Like to have an extra Ammo Carrier, not sure what it is called. Leather or ? wrapped around the stock. RECO ??????

What did you brush the butt plate with (nylon, brass, bronze bristles)?

I started with Brass, then SS. using a spray Break-free, and CRC rust buster. . Still looks not so good. The rust is less but seems in bedded in the checkering

Gotta love a nice lever action...
Personally, I wouldn't get too drastic with the butt plate. Maybe just hit it again with a light oil again and nylon brush to get more of the rust off and protect it from going further.
But there are several different types of bluing kits also available if you're looking to refinish it.

There are all kinds of places available online now that have some very cool leather accessories to add cheek rest or buttstock cover with a ammo holder and/or sling combo.
I haven't used these guys but this site some pretty cool examples of what's out there.

I cant tell from the photos but is the scope cantilevered out to the left side of the receiver? The reason I ask is that Win '94's were top eject until they started making an Angle Eject model in 1982. If your gun was made in 1955 and the scope sits directly atop the ejection chamber then when you cycle the action your spent brass will at best smack the bottom of your scope and at worst fall back into the chamber and prevent you from cycling a new round.

You sure that's just rust? Try an xacto blade point on the rust ( those two round clusters ). See it it feels right.

Try a little bit of vinegar. It has to sit on there a little while. So maybe soak a cotton patch and blue tape it in place? You could take the plate off and soak the entire thing. Not sure what it would do to the bluing though.

Win1300. Yes she has a williams "Off set" scope mount. Up and to the left, enough to use the Iron sights
Barn. Yup it is rust, got it down to being discolored [ almost bare metal.] Thanks guys. Will post more pics soon. Still looking for a sling and A Spare shell carrier.

These style kits are available. There is a centering jig so you can get the rear stud mounted center of the buttstock almost perfectly available as well..

Brownells sells a replacement pre-64 butt plate.
