A few other points on the commoratives. Winchester started doing them in 1964 with the Wyoming Diamond Jubilee (serial #000 which also sold for in this auction, see screenshots in OP) and ended in 1997. They no longer make Winchesters in New Haven, CT. Miroku of Japan makes them and the are really gorgeous (nicer IMO that the Umberti copies).

Below is a list of all of them with the limited run number issued as well as the original price. It is interesting to see that this one was offered at $1,500 back in 1977 and the first one in 1964 was only $99.95. I suppose the gold plating and presentation case had a factor in that price hike.

This Limited Edition I, was created to commemorate Winchester hitting the 5M point in sales for the Model 94 rifle. Full info in Truland's book on "Wincheter Commemoratives".

I'll also say it's a bit of a shame to see the Crawford collection, which in it's whole as 43 serial numbered 000 rifles from the Winchester archives, was super unique parted out for auction. I get that it created higher prices and competitive bidding, and I'm glad to have a piece of it, but some of the matched numbers and the Boy Scout/Eagle Scout set (the Eagle scout .22 sold for $14K) sets are forever parted.

Recently an interesting collection of Winchesters came to auction. Charles Crawford, the owner of CDNN Inc. (one of the largest wholesalers of guns) bought a rare collection of commemorative Winchester lever guns years ago directly from the Winchester archives for his personal collection.

These included many rare limited commemorative with the special "0" serial number designation, not for public sale, but set aside and stored in the Winchester archives. Through his gun wholesaling connections Crawford purchased 43 of these unique rifles directly from Winchester and now one resides in my collection.

See the attached letter from the president of Winchester.

      --Limited Edition to 1,500.

--Comes with original box, wooden display case, factory paperwork including letter from Winchester president.

--This is the one the factory pulled and gave the 000 prefix serial number and put it into the Winchester archives.

---Gold plated, engraved, superior quality wood.

It was a truly rare opportunity and I was glad to grab this one for a few thousand below my mark. Other notable guns included an Eagle Scout .22 and the Wyoming Jubilee 94.

Fun focusing on guns again in this crazy world. Got a lot more coming....
That's awesome! I got the email about the auctions and considered it, but have a few other projects going on now. I am VERY glad one of these found it's way to your collection.r

It really was a unique opportunity being serial number zeros directly from the “Winchester museum”. I’m very curious what Winchester did with the rest of their archives or how incomplete their factory collection is if they were willing to sell 43 of these back in 2003 to a private collector. Anyway fun auction, did lose the bid on the 76 bicentennial (handsome looking faded silver gun) but it got too hot.

So all of the Winchester museum pieces from Charles Crawford's collection seem to have been auctioned off (super glad I got a piece of that). However, CDNN Inc. is still offering some cool Winchesters from his private collection and seems to be slowly rolling the remaining items out.

Here is one current auction ending tomorrow, that's a beauty. If I was into Safari guns or the money tree grew quicker.....
