    Theodore Roosevelt's Winchester 1876

I went to Sagamore Hill (Pres. Theodore Roosevelt’s summer house) and saw his Winchester 1876 chambered in .45-75. Other rifles and pistols were on display as well.

The 1876 was first manufactured in 1876 (duh) and was called the “Centennial Model”.

President Roosevelt’s 1876 is engraved with a buffalo and deer. It also has a plate on the stock with a bear engraved on it. He ordered it when he was 22 years old.

It was difficult to appreciate the detail of the rifle because it was tarnished and behind a glass case.

However, years ago Turnbull Restoration & Manufacturing Co. (Bloomfield, New York) built 25 exact duplicates (not replicas) of Roosevelt's 1876. They were given access to the original rifle in 2005 and it was measured, photographed, etc.

The below are photographs of a duplicate manufactured by Turnbull.

That's a beautiful rifle. Can't imagine what that would cost these days.

Here's his Winchester 1895 chambered in .405 Win.:

If TR is someone that draws your interest, his birthplace, and childhood home, on East 20th St. is due to reopen next month after quite a bit of mechanical renovation.

We visited there in the early 80's. They had a Colt - Browning 1895 "potatoe digger" machine gun on display, just like he used in Cuba.
