Despite making fun of AK's on a few posts today - I would pick AK.
Simply because they are virtually indestructible, always fire and require very little maintenance.
In a true SHTF scenario who is going to have the time and the tools to properly maintain an AR.

There was a mud test on YouTube. AR functioned and the AK failed.

If I'm on the move and the environment is sucky then an AK. If I don't want to worry if I drop my rifle, then an AK. If I don't want to worry about getting my rifle wet, then an AK. If I need to shoot through an obstruction, then an AK.

Let's face it, an AR isn't good for much except the range. That's why there's so much rumbling in the US military about an upgrade, or replacement system.

The rest of the world looks at the AK and says "DA! Iz good!"

I had an M16 that I carried through the jungle and the desert. Never failed me. On long humps i sure appreciated the light rifle and the light ammo so I could carry more.
Being able to hit a man sized target from 500 yards with open sights made me feel very comfortable. The only way to do that with an AK is by accident.
Sure, an M16 is an actual assault rifle and all, not a sportirized rifle like an AR or the fake named AKs we have.
As to the rest of the world, that's not a big factor for me.
People that wipe their ass with their hands, isn't exactly a sterling endorsement.
