I did it for many years (until I moved) it's a lot of effort and time. You're expected to go to weekly company practice at night, every Sunday was a 5 hour department get together for training, truck maint, etc. You also need to get your basic classes in and get you degree in firematics. Every department is different, but mine required a certain amount of points (calls, fire or ambulance) per month also.
